Turkey hunt 4/26/08

Took my nephew on his first turkey hunt yesterday morning. Set up in a place where the turkeys have been doing alot of scratching and dusting. At daybreak heard one gobbler about 200 yards away on the roost. I gave him a little low key hen yelps and he was gobbling away. He finally flew down and sounded like he was coming our way for a while then he went toward another field...henned up I thought. We picked up our decoys and snuck around to the other field and set up. I called a little and a hen crossed the field about 300 yards out and was going toward the far side of the field. I thought I would see the gobbler in tow but lo and behold he was already on the far side struttin. We tried to sneak around and get closer but never got within range for the gobbler. So much for a turkey, but I had a backup plan for a little excitement.
Went to another spot on our lease and broke out my 22-250 and my coyote call. Went to the bottom of a pasture where a creek borders and set my caller out. Played a little fox pup distress followed by some coyote pup yelps. My nephew has never seen a coyote much less shot one and I have told him to be patient and wait for a shot on whitetails....can't do that with coyotes. You have to shoot them when you see them. Well this little blonde yote comes in on a string and stops for just a second in some tall grass...only the head exposed. He says he could shoot it in the head but doesn't take the shot and the yote is within forty yards and walks toward us. I let out a bark to stop it and it stops for an instant and I'm telling my nephew to shoot but he doesn't. Well coyotes don't stand for long in my experience and they recognize that something is out of place ten times faster than any whitetail. To make a long story short all we managed to do was educate one....til next time.
