Well the board let me know yesterday that I haven't posted in a couple weeks so I thought I'd give a quick report of what I've been doing. Christmas day I left Richmond en route to Charlotte where I would meet up with my buddy Michael for our roadtrip to Stuttgart, Arkansas. We arrived the afternoon of the 26th after the longest 12 hour ride of my life...![]()
Day 1 was 70 degrees and sunny but we managed to do well in the rice field killing our limit of 20 mallards and 2 spoonbills by 8:00. The other group we were with had 15.
Day 2
Both groups swapped spots and we headed into the marsh. We managed to knock down 12 birds pretty quickly but only found 7 of them. 30 minutes in, Michael's dog starts coughing up blood pretty heavy so we left to get her some help. Found out that she had eaten rat poison the night before!Dog was fine but didn't hunt the rest of the week. The other group in the rice field managed to kill 29 birds by 9:30.
No pictures because we were kind of hurried.
Day 3
Hunted monday on some public land in the bayou and after getting set up in the flooded timber we watched group after group of mallards get up. Shooting time came around and the fun began. We had groups of greenheads landing only feet from us and it was an absolute blast watching them pour down from the treetops. This was probably my favorite hunt of the trip. We ended up with 21 mallards and 2 woodies. I also killed my first banded duck (woody) on this hunt.
Day 4
We were supposed to hunt snow geese Tuesday morning but the guide did us a favor by saying he couldn't promise birds, so we cancelled. The deer hunt that afternoon proved to be another addition of and already action packed trip. Three of us hunted one large field anxious to see what would soon pop out. Some large deer have been taken of this property in the past year. We watched as deer cruised out into the field as early as 3:45. I lost count but we estimated seeing between 50-60 deer in the field all at once! A large 10 pointer walked out but was missing his right side, but this thing was a bruiser that probably weighed 230 pounds. Michael then watched a nice 8 pointer walk out in front of him around 5 o'clock. One shot and he was down. Good way to cap off the afternoon.
Day 5
Lay day.
Day 6
Went back in the marsh we hunted on Sunday and saw lots of birds but couldn't get any of them to lite. Ended up bringing back 9 birds while the other group shot 7. A little slower.
Day 7
On my last day we went to a new hole. Had to motor out there because it was a little out of walking distance. This spot really opened up in the middle and looked almost mystical as the fog rolled through. Birds appearing and disappearing out of nowhere almost constantly. Ended up with 13 after losing quite a few more. Mostly ringnecks with a couple gadwalls, a mallard, a teal, and a shoveler. The other group returned with 13. Great hunt to end the trip.
I left Charlotte on Sunday and trekked across NC to my other buddies spot near Mattamuskeet the next two days. This club draws for blinds and we got the short end of the stick on both huntsbut still had a blast. Killed 8 on monday while the other two groups each killed their limit of 24
. Sure that our luck would change tuesday (yesterday), we headed out in the morning downpour to a different spot and shot 6. The group 100 yards from us killed their 24 in under 30 mins
. It was hard to watch all that carnage without being a part of it. One other group limited, and the fourth came in with 21. The trip's over and I'm back at school but what a way to spend Christmas break. Can't wait until next year.
