Which Tri-Tronics E Collar?

I'm a newby to electronic collars, but by all indications the Tri-tronics G3 series is what I want for a retriever. No field trials, just a working dog traing. I'm fairly sure the "Sport" series will fit my bill, but am somewhat confused over the Sport Basic and Sport Combo models.---- simple is good.
As I understand it, the basic model has a buzzer, while the Combo has a tone option.
I can't even remember how to use my TV remote, so again, simple is good.
comparisons?--- suggestions?

Glenn you may want to check out the Dogtra 1700NC.
I had TTs for years but I'm not a fan of their new generation stuff.

Glenn,
I trained both my Brittanys on the Field 70. It has 5 levels of stimulous of which I never got above 2. Maybe a 3 once in a while on my head strong male. They are very useful tools as long as they're not abused. You can ruin a dog with them so be careful.

Good luck.

Will do Bert. I've never used an e-collar and don't plan on any elaborate training--- basic obedience and simple marks. What's the main complaint regarding the TT G3 collars?

Glenn, I have 6 TT collar's I use with my rabbit dog's. I've had a total of 8 collar's,2 were very old and I don't have them now. I've not had any problem with them. The first thing I suggest to anyone who is going to use a shock collar for training is to first use it on yourself, I'm serious. Put it to your thigh and pull the trigger. I do it my self, that way you know what you are handing your dog. Too light of a shock is better than too much. As been said you can break a dog if you do not know what you are doing, or are too heavy handed with it. Every dog is different, some really don't like being "stimulated", for those it is a pretty quick program. PM me if you like. Frank,SeaPower

That explains things.

Seriously, thanks for the advice Frank. I have witnessed good dogs ruined with such collars, but have come to learn this is a result of a totally improper approach to training. I have purchased various E-collar training manuals and books and plan on using Mike Lardy's methods of minimal stimulation training.

Glenn,
Steve Snell has a pretty thorough review of the various collars on his website... http://www.gundogsupply.com/tri-tronics.html

I spent a good bit of time reviewing before purchasing the G3.

Testing the collar on myself was eye-opening...

I have the G2 trashbreaker, it has 6 different levels of stimulus and a setting for tone/beep. Even on my thick skinned, bull headed, very pain tolerant redbone I seldom have to use it above level 2 which on the palm of the hand generates a simple mild tingling. Most of theese collars come with a training DVD, watch the video first.

Its been my experience that theese things can work wonders if used properly, I've found it best if the dog already knows its basic sit, stay, come commands while in the house, or on a short leash. That way it has something to relate the stimulus to what it (the dog) is or isnt doing affield, and keeps the dogs attention on you.
