Trees for the Deer
What I would really like to discuss is freshwater fishing but I can't seem to find where to post. So I will tell you about some of the trees we have planted for the deer. Zone 8. We have some pears. One of our best stands is a tower stand located "in" a pear tree(Trophy Pear but orient, pineapple, asian, and moonglow are good also). The deer love it. Located nearby is also apple(anna, dorsett, mutsu, yates, grannysmith all are good varities to plant) and fig(try brown turkey, celeste, or texas everbearing)
![]() Pic is of a pair of sheds found by beagleman. He had killed a buck out of the pear tree stand opening day. About a week went by and He returned to that stand and when he was coming out the gate he noticed the headlights shining on the one palmated horn. When we dropped the deer of to get mounted we mentioned that a shed had been located and that it appered to match this deer. It has a unique set. horns don't match. He suggested that the other horn could be in the general area of the first shed. Search 50 yards from the found shed along scrapes and trails. When Beagleman went back he did look for it and found it about 100 yards from where he had found the other. It is nice to have the mount in velvet and also the sheds. He seemed to have decreased in pionts but the mass was better. Deer was old and on the downside. You could see the scars from battles with other bucks in the area. Back to the fruit tree thing. Also we have planted some Jap Persimmons. Are trying Fuyu and Euricka varities here in zone 8. Trees are doing nicely. They produce very large fruit. The tree's branches are weeping towards the ground. I have planted grapes, berries, sawtooth oaks, and plums. One old homesite I hunt has a Mulberry tree. I spent most of the moring today fertalizing some of the trees and bushes around the farm and doing a little work cleaning paths. Also put out mineral blocks. Saw good signs...I cant wait to see if my work is paying off this year. Plant Trees for the Deer and other wildlife.

great post, good info there, I have room for a few more trees, we planted 10 apple trees for them, they work. A bad thunderstorm blew off most of our apples this year when they were only about 1", but we still have a few left. It was gonna be a great year, the trees were loaded, then the ground was covered after the storm.

Thunderstorms
We had severe thunderstorms in our area. They brought with them hail. The hail knoced off some fruit on the plums and the apples. Gonna have some pears and what plums did make has already ripened. They were delicious. The grapes seem like they will make if we get some rain and nothing bad happens to them. Blackberries had a good crop. Sweet Corn(silver queen) could have used more water but we should get one more picking if the critters leave it alone tonight. Persimmons have some fruit on them (one tree is loaded). Blueberries are looking good, get to pick in a week or so. We need more rain..

Rattlesnakes
Yeah I don't wanna miss the rattlesnakes. I have a great recipe for rattlesnake if anyone is interested. Just be sure to kill him BEFORE he gets mad. I like to kill them by cutting their head off about 5 inches behind head, just to be safe.

Pears have made a good crop. Persimmons have made a good crop. The scuppernongs are getting ripe, some vines are loaded, while others are bare. Even have a few pomergranets hanging on the branches, those will be ready soon I hope. Just a few apples left on the tree, what we did make were small.
