Three days In the Whitetail Mecca

Ok First let me start by saying if you think you have seen deer you aint seen $hit. We (Me and my girlfriends father Glenn) hoped on the six o'clock pm ferry from Cape May to Lewes on Mission "Operation thin the herd" and fill the freezer with quality meet instead of the swamp deer we shoot here in Cape May. We made a pit stop in Virgina to pick up a boat from HOLWATCHAGOT (sorry about spelling) then continued our mission to Tarboro NC. We arived around 2Am and I was fired up ready to go. Marty met us and drove us by the local Wendys to show us some deer. There was a few and some in the Sports complex parking lot, I shit you not in the parking lot. We went to the hunting cabin where there are six beds and a couch and Glen decides to sleep in a chair for an hour before we go into the woods. Me I stayed awake and paced around took a shower rechecked everything the whole deal. Marty drops us off in the moning and walks me down a clear cut freshly raked path to my stand. He did everything but pave it. I mean absolute dead quiet you cant find a twig to crack. I reached over and broke one off just to make sure I was awake an this was happening. Ok now I make it to the stand, double ladder 20' with Burlap camo sides. Im in the tree and It is pitch black and there are deer all around me. It didnt take three minutes, almost like they followed me in. It took about 30 minutes before we had shooting light and the deer are everywhere. Three on my right four in front, two big cows under the holly tree to the left. When you see one, before I could focus my eyes, there are four. It is unbelieveable. That morning I shot over the back of two Does. It is very hard to shoot there are so many deer around you that there is always three watching you. The big does dont step out into the clearing very often either. That evenings hunt It was raining so hard I couldnt see, I had a black lab around my stand for about fifteen minutes. The rest of the evening I never saw a deer in the stand. MArty said that dog has messed everything up come down lets see if we can stalk one in the field. I met up with Marty as we were walking down this road MArty called it he said "knock an arrow I always see deer right around this corner on the side of the road and he did the same. He is in front of me we come around the corner and he stops. There he is, he comes to full draw takes a step out to shoot around this small scrub oak and the deer takes off running. A big bodied at least eight pointer right there twenty yards. Gone what a disappointment. The noght ended we didnt see anymore deer and we were soaked from head to toe. I had 5" of water in my boots when I returned to camp. My girlfriends dad saw two does missed one and saw two bucks, a spike and a Five pointer. Day two started the same except this time I was ready. Standing holding my bow. Was up there about fifteen minutes before the first deer came in. I didnt thing they were ever going to come Well It took about an hour before I could get a shot at one and finaly through a small opening in the brush I had my first doe of the trip. A high shot right in the spine, she dropped instantly. Not to let her get away after the first day of misses I hit her a second time. I sat till about 9 then decided to start the drag about 3/4 of a mile out of the woods. My girlfriends dad only saw two small Does. That afternon I sat on the edge of a sweet potato field where we saw 4 does the night before and fifteen turkeys. I saw 6 does and a Hudge rack atleast 8 points or more. The deer was coming across the field was about 150 yard when he came out and was walking right to me when he was about 80 yds he turned and went to the middle of the field and started eating. The deer then went back into the place where he came out. The next mornig I was going to hunt the field edge and see what happens. I put some corn on the corner of the field about 30 yds to direct the deer my way cause they come out at random where ever they feel like it. Well I got to my stand in the morning and I for some dumb reason I hooked my pull rope to my bow string. Well when I pulled the string It puled my bow string off the cam on my bow. Here I am in the tree with no string. This sucks. I know that big deer was going to come out now. Not wanting to sit in the there to watch deer parade under me cause I know that was what was going to happen. I left and went on a spot and stalk with Marty. We are headed to the truck to go to Rocky Mount to have My bow string put back on, my gorlfriends father is in the stand he said he was staying till 12 30. Were walking along this field edge wind is blowing from left to right into the field, well our scent must have blown into this field and a Hudge buck stands up. All we can see is the tops of his horns. I dont have a weapon so I grab the camera from Marty and we start walking the way we saw the deer move. We come to the corner of the field we are croutched down we cant see the antlers. We are talking about what the hell could have happened to the deer. This part is all on film we are talking and Im looking at Marty croutched behind him. To our left I see the biggest set of white antlers moving about to come out on the road at about 15 yds. Im telling Marty there he is, there is a small tree in the way Marty cant see him. He moved to see and the deer caugh it and took off. Man what a close encounter with a big buck. The biggest one I have ever seen. We went to a place in Rockey Mount, Shooters and saw the owner Bill. I highly recomend this place. With a rack full of bows that need to be fixed I told him my deal that I was done hunting and today was going to be my last day and I need my bow fixed ASAP. He immediatly went to work. Put my string back on and had me shoot my bow at his target. It is shooting high. I said we have to move the sight, he said no evverything should be exact. Well come to find out the guy who built my bow never served my string right so when I drew my peep was moving. Explains the two shots over the deers back and the spine shot. This guy spent an hour and would not let me walk out of there untill my bow was right. He wanted me shooting them in the 10 ring with my broad heads at his target. I cant thank him enough .By 12:00pm I was back in the game and it cost me $25. The night prior Marty saw a 130 class buck in the front field so in the climber I go. I saw 6 does had plenty of shot opertunities but held off waiting for the big buck. He never showed up. All in all Im sure I saw fifteen bucks in the fields close to a hundred does. Atleast 50 out of the tree stand. Anyone who is up for a learning experience and a challenge go to Tarboro Deer Carnival I promise you you will see untold number of deer. Im goign back in November as soon as I confirm I wil give you the details. The freezer is still empty and I need more arroes and broad heads. There are plenty of deer still we only killed 1. Thanks again Marty.
