The property I hunt here in central NC has an enormous cutover/thicket. I doubt a human could walk through it it is so thick. In years past it has been a haven for the deer. But here latley I here lots of coyote howls and barks coming from within and I am seeing less deer. A lot less. I would like to get the dogs out, I have never trapped them but know a few people who do. I have never hunted them, but would'nt mind giving it a try. Whats better, trapping or hunting, I just want them gone. Any help or tips are greatly appreciated.
snares. they are easy to make. stainless cable, two nuts that will slide on wire, and a flat washer the size of a quarter. drill two holes on each side of washer that the cable will slip in. bend the washer into a L. cut cable about 30-36". put a nut on one end and hit it with a heavy hammer to crimp it secure on. slide washer on with v in L pointing down all the way to first nut. ("v" needs to point away from the big loop) grab nut and washer and slide open end of cable in the other hole in washer. slide down to make a loop of about 12". put other nut on other end of cable........nut needs to be big enough to double end back through before you crimp it. this makes a 2" loop on the non business end.
put the business end loop about 9" off the ground on a yote trail. this is serious medicine for yotes. it is non discriminating, it will catch dogs so make sure your pets aren't running loose on your hunting land.
put three or five on a rabbit trail. put one hanging 3" off ground. you will catch rabbit. it will make distressed rabbit sounds. you will catch several yotes coming to get the rabbit.
you can make 50 of these in an afternoon for not much money.
Get on them as soon as you can! Once they get a foothold they are hard to get rid of. We call them in and shoot them after deer season. One caller one shooter. You know the saying "If there was a nuclear war the only thing left would be Coyotes and Cockroaches!!"
Thanks guys, I have researched coyote hunting videos and it seems most set up near or in big fields. There are some close to the property I hunt but not on the property itself. So the best I could do is call from and hunt in open woods. I really liked the snare idea, I may give that a try. Greg, I might give you a call and let you take me on a few trips, do I have to hunt them with a bow?
Shoot em all. Last year a friend of mine shot 8 in one day. If the city allowed shooting in the city limits I would have dropped the one in my front yard this summer.
