all I know is they are very distructive. Doesn't take but a few trips on the same trail to leave marks that last for decades, possibly hundreds of years. I don't own one for that reason. I suppose they can be used without damage but I don't see it very often.
Overrated? Whoever that is (you?) they just need better tires.Definately looks like a capable machine but those tires are shot for that kinda riding. My 650 prairie would have ate that little mud puddle up. Try a set of 28 inch ITP Mud lites they are unbelievable. I have a 2" lift on the front for clearance and 2" in the back just to level it out (solid axle) and if I can hang on, it will go up, over or through with out any problems. We go down to Carolina Adventure World and mine is the one that pulls out every one else I ride with.

Not to argue but thats a bit over exagerated. I have trails on my back property that we made three years ago that are already starting to disappear. Some areas may be more delicate than others, sometimes severe use may leave lasting trails but more than likely water runoff attributed to more of the damage than the original atv trails. For example I went riding this past summer on our families farm in PA and the some of the trails which havent been ridden on in 5-6 years were completely grown over and almost gone.
Yes, they are over-rated.
I absolutely hate ATV's.
I think they have single handedly ruined the sport of deer hunting in some areas.
I really wish the law would crack down on people outright hunting off of them.
They should only be allowed to be used by people who are disable in some way.
If you are too damn lazy to walk, you should not be hunting.
Just my opinion, and you know what they say about opinions.

Weekender,
Couldn't be more true. Ride one over marsh grass and it's over, permanent scar. My personal experience proves the tracks remain for at least fifteen years. Can't say for certain how long the scars stay....but can say for certain it's too long.
Prudent riders can prevent lots of the damage...but the type that ride them more often than not could care less. I think they are to hunting what Ski-Doos are to fishing. LOUD, STINKY, and OBNOXIOUS.
That photo says a bunch about the mindset of four wheeler hunters. The bog pictured will always wear the scars from tons-o-fun sinking in it. I don't even want to think of what it looked like when they got the bike out.
Keep em on the trails and your own land and they are great.

Unfortunately they are like guns. You have people that use them right, and then you have those that don't. When used responsibly they are a great tool. However there are not many that use them that way. And here in NC, most forest land is off limits to them.
I love them to get deer out or drop corn but as transportation to and from stands has ruined 2 of my spots they put the deer on defcon5 as soon as they ride in.
