Haven't posted in a while so I figured I would. I was fortunate enough to draw a gator tag this year in my state of SC. Out of the 5 of my friends and family, I was the only one.
We missed a bunch, but was finally able to seal the deal on a ten footer on the fourth try. We hooked the gator with a 12/0 weighted treble and fought the ******* for an hour and a half. Was finally able to pull him up along side of the boat and harpoon him and drop a few .40's in his head. That is the short story and a very intense and awesome hunt.
Not quite sure how to add pics to a post....but I did put a few pics up on my album, feel free to check them out!!
I was wondering if anyone else on here did gator hunting. I went out a few weeks back with some friends, we took a 10.5' male, bout 400#. We do it the hard way though, sneakin up behind them and letting them feel the poon. ours took three poons, two .45 heads and two 12 ga. slug bang sticks to slow him down.
Frank, once you go on a hunt, its addicting! its amazing how strong they are. Our process is cool, the harpoon is attached to a float. once you stick 'em, you follow the float until you are close enough to stick them again. generally 2-3 good poon shots is all it takes to get hand control of them. then a few well placed shots with bangsticks will normally kill them. our big boy took four bangsticks and a knife to the spine to fully dispatch him.

Fla Deckie,
Sound's like a good time to me. Of course I like bear and hog huntin up-close style myself. I've heard the meat is good to boot, never had it yet!!!! I think the hunt would be right up my alley. Post up some more guy's, you've got my interest!!!! Frank
I couldnt find your album, did anyone else? To post pics scroll down a little to the manage attachments and browse to your pics click upload and close window after they disappear in the window.
Yeah, Deckie, it is super addictive. This is the second year of SC's season and the gators get really spooky. They would not let us get up close. We tried for three nights and we were being a little selective. We wanted a double digit gator!! The little ones let you get right up to them. Luckily, we were able to cast over one during the day and harpoon him when we got him close so we could control him. So we had a 12/0 hook in him and a harpoon tip buried deep. Four well placed shoots from a SIG .40 ended his day. He took 2 in the head that didn't even phase him, but one hit the right spot and he just went limp (plus a bonus just to be safe).
There are a bunch of well schooled guides in FL and they make the trip to SC for our season. We did it by ourselves and even made our own harpoon and tips. It was an awesome experience and I will definitely be putting in for a tag next year!!
