Anyone had issues with their sunflowers this year?? The fields that I've been watching failed to make sufficient seed. The heads opened, but little seed was in them. In many cases the the heads just opened and fell off.
What happened??

I was begining to think the men in the green suits had taken you away (again)---- where ya been?--- edit: never mind, just saw your thread in Mix it Up
Anyway, the kids planted 1/2 acre or so for their produce stand (and also serve as my back yard dove hunt) but nary a seed--- flowers were big as a basketball but nothing ever formed in the seed center--- damnifino. On a brighter note, melons and 'lopes were the best year ever---- a lope field with rotting fruit is crack candy for doves.

COMCAST ISSUES....Still a few glitches, but it is workable.
Aliens??? Global Warming??? Obama??? Damfino but several folks that I've spoken to are in the same boat. Nary seed.
I never got around to planting my sunflowers this year guess it's just as well.
Our corn got cut on Tuesday. It should be a good first week for geese and doves.

Some of our heads where small, but still produced some seed. We could see a big difference in the areas of th field that did not get as much fertilizer and the areas that the spray did not take. Those areas with little weed competition and good fertilizer where as big as a dinner plate and full. The other areas smaller than your fist and very small seeds. Song birds are tearing the little heads up and the seed is just about gone. The only heads missing are those eatin by the deer (they will eat every head in a small field once they figure out how good they are) and the ones that fell victim to the silage chopper.
It seems that alot are having trouble with this same issue..no sunflowers for us this year but the corn turned out okay. and man did we have a good resident goose hatch to the north of me..should be some good hunting this year!
