The arranged meeting was to be 5 AM... At 4:45 my phone is ringing with Deep Deckhand at the other end. "Just wanted to make sure you weren't sleeping?"
"No numb nuts. I'm pulling into your driveay as we speak..."
DD and his cousin Matt took my gear and loaded it in the pickup and off we went. Of course there was the token stop at WaWa for coffee and rolls. Then to the super sneaky spot we call our own...
As we pulled on to the last street before our stopping spot. I saw two white asses up ahead. Surely they would be does. We slowed as we approached the two that were busy eating the flowers at the end of a driveway. They lifted their heads and turned out to be a couple bucks! One six and one eight... Continuing on we saw two more does and then anther buck all hammering these peoples ornaments.
With all that sign, this day was bound to be a super hunt. I could taste the bambi burgers already. We got stealh and tiptoed into positions. It was a clean entry. No reason not to score big.
The dark started to wane and the first light brought with it those mystery shadows it always does. Then I saw a triangular shape and what looked like horns over my right shoulder. "Oh crap... He has me nailed..." I locked up and froze in place. The shape didn't move. Seconds turned to minutes. Neither willing to flinch . Then as the light got better i realized it was just the angle of the shadow on a fallen branch.
I sat there trying to listen between the light puffs of wind and the occasional passing geese. An owl hooted away as squirrels kept me on my guard. Eventually though it was clear that no deer were moving. The other two joined me and also recounted zeros for their morning views. We climbed back in the truck and with tails between legs drove on off knowing full well that we do indeed suck again...
We did put a good squash on some peanut bunker for our chunking trip after the morning hunt. I have now rubbed apple all over me in preparation for the afternoon try at getting de-sucked...
