    Smoke pole belches

Thursday evening in the rain things were slow. I had been seeing deer pretty good at this spot. Ten one evening, 11 another, 3 bucks chasing but I had not shot. I would have bet a months pay that this rainy evening with a decent wind direction would have had the deer on the move. It was getting late and I hadn't seen a thing. I hadn't heard from Kay either so I know she wasn't seeing anything. About sunset I catch movement and see a big body deer slip out of the thicket. I only takes one glimpse of that sagging belly and I'm trying to get the cross hairs lined up. I slip the safety off and try to squeeze the trigger. The ole black Knight belches and the smoke roles. I can't see anything down range. I very slight SW wind moves the smoke away. The deer is gone, down I hope. Before I can get reloaded another deer is slipping out. I grab my bonoculars and this one has short spikes that will keep him safe from me. The buck traveled about 100 yds with both lungs leaking. Not too much of a rack but probably the biggest body dear we have taken on our place. I love the wrinkles in his neck. He is at least 3 1/2 yrs old. The older I get, the more I love a little brushed in ground blind. Seems to add something being eye level. Had a gray fox 3 steps yesterday hunting on the ground.
