Well damn if the ladies didn't come back. 6:50ish they were back and headed for the yards. They were taking the path on the neighbors property that they have always favored once they start eating the persimmons. Looks like only the wayward deer will be making it's way under the stand for now.
They were of course spooked by the pool people again and went back to the woods, just out of sight. These leaves have got to go, I can't see a damn thing.
A little later they came back and moved out into the yards. Mom and her twins, the aunt, and many others. Most of them came from the other yard and bypassed my area. I don't think they know I'm there, it just makes sense for them to take the route they are....no hill climbing, no people, direct route from bedding to feeding area.
They fed around in the yards for a while and momma and a fawn headed accross the fence to join up with the apple tree deer....yeah she was back like clockwork. Momma jumped the fence and the upset little youngin scurried around until she found her hole underneath....the same place it was before, but damn if she remembered.....kids!!
About 7 more continued their way into the yards near the pool hole. It's funny...they walk right along the orange safety fence and concrete forms, but won't come over to me in the nice woods along a safe field....suckers.
well the light left and so did I.....I slowly made my way to the truck, but of course they watched me the whole way.
Maybe they know about me afterall??
Tomorrow it's the reservoir in the morning, Mike knows to call me this time.
If work allows I'll be on the offsensive tomorrow with the climber in the evening. I found the perfect tree that should make the shot about 25 yds.
well damn if a climber isn't a shit ton of work....packed my vid cam, still cam, knife and other goodies in my pack, strapped it to the stand and headed off into the darkness.
Mike lead the way and by 5:45 we were each up a tree.
I'm along a draw and mike is about 15yds to my left.
plenty of white oaks around up here, they're dropping acorns all over. even on me. sounds like a bowl of rice crispies out here
perfect weather
5 does. 2 differnt groups. 2 skirted behind us @ about 75. 3 came in like they were on a string. it was perfect.
got to about 20 and saw mike as he went to draw.....he did good, but these yuppie deer are good. real good.
beautiful evening in the woods. decemt breeze. had some thunderstorms last night that cooled everything off and took the humidity with them. hatched some fresh skeeter though.
2 outta the 3 yards I border are being mowed. One is almost done but the other is tackling 3 acres of grass with 3 feet of craftsman.....it's gonna be a while.
All I need is the last 1/2 hour.
i'm in the climber tonight just shy of 30 yds from their favorite trail of the week.
stay tuned.
hell ccant even type a message.
10 within 30. messed up. grazed her back. what a polack
it wasn't 10 within 30 yds it was 12 within 20 yds. That's just too damn close for me. I want one damn doe. 25-30....steep shots suck.
So decide upon the climber today since the deer have been using a path too far away from my other stand. Perfect tree too, just the right size and its one of those arrow straight poplars with leaves at about 25 ft. Perfect to break up my outline and wasy to climb.
I get up there without a problem. There's lawn mowing going on so I've got plenty of time. NOT
Here they come. momma with twins first, running to a pile of corn I set out in front of the other stand....figures. They start munching....a little greens, a little corn, maybe an ear scratch. One fawn is paying too much attention to the woods where they came from. Hell....here they really come. before I know it 9 more show up. Big ole grey faced doe in the lead walks right at me, looks up, smells....goes right back to browsing. ARE YOU KIDDING? I can't be that good.
Sure enough another doe does the same. All 12 are within 20 yds and don't know I'm there. I pick one out that looks tasty and draw. Are you kidding? None of the 12 heard or saw that? now I'm really good.....HA....let's call it luck.
That's where the luck ran out. I anchored, leaned over at the hips. put the sites on her and let loose.
SHIT....just barely high. What did I do wrong? Didn't concentrate on the sites and line them up right, jerked the release....well that's enough to miss. Used all my luck a little too early.
All but two bolted and I knocked another arrow. By the time I was ready she and her young one were slowly headed through some thick stuff and that was it.
Nothing but tree rats till dark.
retrieve the arrow and head for the truck. Nothing on it but dirt.
Damn apple tree doe was there again and has a friend this time. Maybe I'll try for her with a groundblind. That way i can't blame the steep shot for my miss.
So that's that....1000+ arrows this summer still doesn't mean your gonna do what you're supposed to when the time comes.
got here with plenty of time to spare today. couldn't stand the office for much longer. 73 sunny w/ a breeze. Still a favorable direction...man have I been lucky.
the corn is nearly gone, I've given them a break sincethe miss....will they remember me? i'm back in the climber again......here they come...
does in the neighbors yard......100 yds. 8 or so.....hard to see with the leaves.
they spooked from the house and went away from me....lets hope that's not a sign of things to come.
I have already personally been skunked 7 times on deer this year. Last year was my worst ducking hunting year and I was only skunked 6 times all year. But I do hunt 4-5 times a week.
So now I just go on the evenings.
I stopped baiting them until all the acorns are gone. My one stand is in the middle of a bunch of white oaks.
1 deer even took a s hit on top of my corn pile. What is he trying to say my corn taste like s hit.
These deer are going to have another thing coming when shotgun comes it.
Suckers wouldn't come back tonight. They headed to the persimmons and yards by a new route I haven't seen them take yet. They were feeding right up against the safety fence around the pool hole. Rotten suckers.
Tomorrow I'm taking corn out around lunch and hunt from 5-dark. meeting wed. and then thursday I'll be playing camera man for Mike again...hope to get his first deer on tape.
And yes these damn deer are a pain. I keep assuming they know I'm there, but then they go ahead and try and eat the damn tree I'm in, and I miss.
I'm starting to get mad and when I get mad I make shit bloody....no more mercy. Even that button buck will die if he gets to close.
