It's 6:40 and the damn deer haven't shown themselves yet. It's starting to get dark in the woods and I'm getting impatient.

I decided to stand up and stretch the legs.

SHIT...there they are. Damn leaves have been in the way the whole time. There's a parade of does walking towards the yards on their way to a persimmon feast. Now any woodsman knows a persimmon tastes like shit until the first frost, not to the deer.

Monday the fruit was hard and green and still on the trees. With the cold weather it had turned yellowish and some had fallen. DING DING DING....Dinner bell to the deer.

So anyway. They creep their way into the yards and begin to browse on some acorns. the persimmons are about 75-100 yds from the woodline, and it's takes a brave and bold deer to head out there while it's still nice and light out.

The orignal 6 or so have made their way to the persimmons, acorns and wood line. They never got closer than 60 yds. I look back to the woods to look for more and after a few min there's a nice medium sized doe at aboutt 40 yds through some leaves and branches. What's this??? She's heading my way. Not out with the rest of the deer.

Well she's cautiously watching the tree rats who are gathering what they can from the forest floor behind me. The whole time I'm frozen like the fellas at buckingham palace. I swear she sees me but can't see how.

She's headed towards a nice clear shooting lane munching on something and occasionally looking my way. She has to make it past two more trees and a big ole rotten stump and she's mine.

damn if it didn't seem like forever. after 5 min of holding my bow up I finally had to relax and lower it. Is this deer ever gonna make it? Should I find a small hole through the shit to snake an arrow through???... she is only about 30 yds.... I can make that shot.

Well she starts to move again and I raise my bow when her head is behind that stump. I'll draw when she's behind the last tree.....this might just work out. Almost an Identical shot to my first deer last year. Just 10 yds further and a larger target.

Her head goes behind the last tree and I begin to draw. 23 yds and broadside.... slowly and surely I'm halfway drawn and from the yards comes a.....OOH AAHHHH LOOK AT THE POOL....THEY INSTALLED THE PUMP TODAY....SUSIE COME LOOK.!!!

Here comes the calvary. All of the yard and woods edges deer are on the move. Here they come. Well of course they head away on the same trail they came...60 yds. My damn backstraps breakfast turned and joined them.

The few stragglers of the heard stuck around to watch the two record book split tails walk around the hole in the ground talking about how great next summer will be, and where the hot tub will go.

Hell I slept through most of my college classes, but I do know that if the two of them were to get in the hot tub you'd need a second well to keep that sucker full. THE HORROR OF THEM IN BATHING SUITS...

So they finally waddle their way back into the house and it's almost too dark to see my sights. I know the whole heard is just out of my site and just waiting for things to calm down. I knew I had to slowly and quietly sneak out, of I'd have to spook the whole shootin match as I left in the darkness. That's a no-no in my book.

I slowly work my way back to the truck, keeping an eye out on the grassy field that tends to have deer in it near dark.

Sure enough I look and 80 yds away stands a doe under an apple tree.

I wait by a huge cherry tree to see where she goes. It's still light enough to shoot out here for at least 10 min.

Well the light faced lady points towards me and damn if she isn't coming fast. 50....40...why's she stopping. Where is she going. I quickly range a few possible shooting lanes and figure I should stay still behind the tree and carefully watch her.

30 yds, but damn if there aren't branches in the way.

Ok Ok I'll shoot from my knees, DAMN IT!! can't do that either, the fence is in the way.

    WAIT SOME MORE.

She stands there 30 yds away just merrily chewing away. She hasn't seen me yet, and there no wind to give away my scent. The only enemy? the night.

She feeds away from me and gives me a chance to change the angle and get a closer more open shot. I take that chance. Slowly taking a step with each one she takes. Some how I am actually making 230lbs quietly walk through leaves and sticks....i think it was a miracle.

She paused behing a bush that was covering her, and I drew the bow. One or two more steps, and she'd be mind. 25 or so yds, quartering away.

The steps come, but she turns to the left and all I have to shoot is ass. There's no way I'm taking that shot. I let down without spooking her, and the ***** has the nerve to bed down!!!! Is she nuts. I've been standing here following her for almost 10 min now, the light is almost gone, the adrenaline has my whole body shaking, and the ***** LAYS DOWN!!!.

I begin to look around for other options and remember I'm in a black walnut grove. I look for one to throw at her, but where the hell are all the nuts?

That's right...George was mowing the lawn when i arrived today. SHIT...now what.

I walk a little further up the fence get an even better angle. I bet when she gets up I'll have that quartering away shot at her right side.

Sure enough I almost trip in a walnut..YES!!! Ammo!!

I threw the nut, clipped my release, and drew....Up she came. a little over 20 yds....damn it I can barely see her. is that her vitals? Shit it's her back leg and tail. THE LITTLE ***** IS WAGGING HER TAIL AND STARING AT ME.....THE NERVE!!!!!

Well she turns her head to browse some more, and I see an opening to shoot her in the neck. Should I?

I don't. She slowly walks away and I put my arrow away and head for home. Of course as I turn to walk to the truck I look to my right and the herd is munching away on acorns, persimmons and the woodline guard is intently watching me as I walk away.

No blood yet, but I did get to draw the bow...3 times!!

Could have taken some low percentage shots, but even these nusiance deer deserve more respect than that.

Still haven't seen an antlered buck. In due time.
