    Rattlers... How Tough???

Just went out to our north county airport to pick up my Mom and her boyfriend who just flew in for the Holidays... Pulling into the entrance I saw what I thought was a palm frond in the road. I was too close to stop before realizing it was a full growed rattler and wound up "speed bumping" over it... I'm not one for letting animals, even snakes suffer, so I backed up to possibly dispatch a cripple.

I got out and the thing wasn't even scratched. Instead It instantly assumed "the position" . I about crapped my pants as I backed up and it moved my way... Screw it I got back in the car and watched it slither away unharmed. Damn things gotta be tough. Big around as a fire hose and about six feet long it laughed at 3800lb steam rolling like it never happened...

Sorrry to hear that she's visually and dimensionally impaired...

It was a bad day to leave the camera home. This thing was cool... Sharp markings and real attitude. I see some hunting but not that big. Certainly not with that kind of attitude. Thats usually the trademark of water moccasins... Now thats an aggressive one!
Kind of surprised me that the rattle was only like four or five segments long... I think thats an indication of young age... If thats the case this critter will be an absolute giant of that species as it gets older...

Deep, I have found that the only way I could inflict bodily harm to a snake with a car was to run over its head and stop the car on top of it and let it sit for a few minutes... It seems that it can't withstand the constant pressure of the car on top of its head. If it is not on its head but on its body, when you pull off it will slizzer away a little on the pi$$ed off side but with a slight limp to is silzzer...

I hit a puff adder in South Africa and it was kind of the same thing but that one had some mobility lost... That one responded well to a shovel and dicing to stop the wiggle though... Cape cobras don't fare well with shovels either...

I shot the head off one in Texas with a 3 1/2" 12 guage. I couldn't stand to touch it even without a head. I carried it back to the bunkhouse on a stick. That thing was still rattling an hour later. I finally got balls to shin it out, but I did not like it.
