Anyone have any tips on ratting? We have a bunch of these f**kers up here and it might be fun to get out there and blast a few away. Wouldn't feel bad or anything.
Planning on using a .177 cal air rifle with a scope. Bait ideas? Location?

22 pistol with rat shot seems to work pretty well
Air gun will work if it's accurate. Go for a head shot.
Can be tough little buggers.
Used to hunt river rats on the harlem
river when I lived in the bronx.
Never lacked for shots
Bait, Cheese works, but a rat will eat anything.
PS: Some of them dam rats were as big as cats.![]()

When we used to Elk hunt the Missouri Breaks in Montana one year the mice and rats were so bad the mid day hunt would be baiting them. We would sit in the tent and had a stump outside with bread on it. When they would come up on the stump we would shoot them with a .44 magnum revolver!! Missed more than we hit but it passed the mid day blues!!![]()
Use a 22 on the big ones. And one of the best baits is peanut butter. It lasts for days even in the rain. and will draw them in from a distance.
WHEN I WAS WORKING THE RIVER DOCKS, WE HAD RIVER RATS, ABOUT THE SIZE OF SMALL BEAVERS WITH TEETH JUST AS YELLOW AND BIG. HAD TO USE MY .357, DID YOU KNOW WHEN YOU HIT THEM THEY SCREAM LIKE A NEWBORN BABY ALSO A REALLY AGGRESIVE ANIMAL TOO. MADE SOME MONEY WITH THE BIGGEST RAT IN THE WEEKLY POOL SOMETIMES.
See i knew this was a good time. I have the assortment of calibers from .22 up to .44. .22 rifle up to .308 Problem is this will be in a lot of urban areas so discharging more than an air rifle would probably be bad.
Thinking about checking out the junkyard up by my uncles property with a .22
Jay, 177 will do you just fine, I get about 35 of these "tree Rats" per year with mine...

Jay.....Sling shot or BB gun. kabobs over an open pinestraw fire is best for cooking them. If you've never had rat and rhubarb kabobs you ain't lived son.
Just gut em and leave the fur on...the fire will burn the fur right off and add real nice to the flavor. Hope this helps.
