    questions about goose hunting?

    1. most people set up with all or the majority of decoys facing into the wind. What is the reason for this? it seems unnatural. when i see geese feeding they are usually all facing different ways.

    2. ive realized goose calling is very different from duck calling. in duck calling, once i get their attention, i usually shut up. if the ducks start veering off to the side i will give them a couple single quacks, drake mallard call, or feeder call. with geese i usually start slow to get their attention, but then pick up the pace when they start coming. i have heard some people say you should stop calling when they are coming. it seems like real geese call more aggressively when the flock gets closer. im not sure if the real geese are getting more aggressive and saying "this is our food get away", or if they are saying "come down there is lots of foo" but i noticed they become much more aggressive.

what are your opinions on these question?

    Thumbs up

When we set up for geese we set them all different ways plau sleepers in the flocks. If you ever look at a flock of geese feeding you will see there are alot of small groups (5-12) with resters next to lookers. You will usually have a long neck looking and not feeding over lookign his group which is usually on the edge of the group.

Second make you a pocket where you want to shoot and remember to make it big enough for them to land. 50-100 geese wont land in a little pocket so remember that when setting up. Also alittle trick to do is to set up 4 or so walkers coming into the main flock. This has drawn any of birds to our flock but can sometimes back fire if they dont walk in.Set them up about 15-20 yards outside of the whole spread.

And the calling thing is different per flock.I seend birds come right in and never make a peep and snuck us when not paying attention then we had a flock want to hear all kinds of loud chatter all the way to the spread. Just work them and watch their every move dont take long to figure out what they want

Hope this helps out any questions give me a holler.

    pay attention ...

to the birds, see how they react to your calls. normally here in early season PA the birds are on a summer pattern, they're used to somewhat of a schedule expecting to see birds in familiar places(local pond, stream, etc) so they don't need much convincing. later on in the season after they've been blasted at by both calls and gunshots i've found they may not want much more than a couple clucks after you get their attention.
good advice above about the hole and walkers, i've used the 'just landed' walkers many times with good effect(should be your best looking, cleanest decoys) you're already on the right track with watching them in fields so try to mimic your spread to what you've seen. also limit the number of upright 'lookers' because an actual flock may only have 1 looker for 8-10 other birds ... good luck!
