Pig Hunt

A few of us are looking to drive down from Maryland for a wild pig hunt. We're are looking to hunt with dogs in the thick stuff (no stalk or stand hunts) and are open for the type of weapon we have to use (prefer knife!). We don't want to shoot them in a pen either, we're looking to hunt are hard w/ dogs to kill some pigs!

Does anyone have any recommendations on guides. We were hoping to hunt in VA, WV or NC because of the drive.

Thanks in advance...

They say, pigs are smarter then dogs and dogs can be smarter then a three year old child.
Do really plan on grabbing a wild pig and stabbing him to death with your knife?aaaaabackingout.gif

They do it in SC. They have dogs that bring the pig to ground and others that
go in and grab it by the ears. Holding it down. The hunter (and I use that term loosly) can walk over and stab it with knife or spear. Fun to watch the dogs work but the ending scene is, in my opinion, not hunting. Once the dogs are on the pig the end game is pretty much certain.
To each his own.

Things like cock fights and any type of animal cruelty is illegal. Yet in VA and NC it's legal to stab an animal to death while it's pinned down by dogs......that's f*#ked up.

Sounds like a good way to get your dogs injured and killed since the dogs are the ones actually subduing the animal.

Yep. Buddy of mine wanted to take a pig with a bow. We were at a plantation in SC. he hit the pig with a good shot but it just pissed him off.
Gored one of the dogs. Nice slash to the neck. Good thing the dog had lots of extra skin. They make colars to protect the dogs but the handler wasn't using one.

When I was in Hawaii (Kauai) I inquired about a pig hunt. A knife was the only weapon the guide would allow. I don't know if it was just this particular guide, but that is all he did.

I wont say they ought to outlaw it, but it is something I will never partake in. (I am against it, but more LAWS is never the right answer!) I am a dog lover, so I dont want to see a dog shredded by a pig (Which happens all the time in that style hunting.)

Where we have permission to hunt, there are a couple dog hunters, and they wreak havoc on the pigs. Its amazing how well that works, as they almost always get one or two. When we hear the dogs, we head to another local, as they are gonna get those pigs holed up tighter than a tick on a coon dog!

I was reading a post on another forum about pig hunting with dogs, and one of the guys was bragging that he has only lost 3 dogs in the past 4-5 years. He also went on to brag at how many he had saved by stapling the wounds shut before the dog bled out! Its a brutal way to get the bacon! I prefer to do it on my own sweat and (if need be) blood!

-The way I look at it the treatment of the dogs seems similar to that of a fighting dog. The dogs are just fighting hogs rather than dogs.

I would guess that 99.9% of the injured dogs never see a vet.

I'm sure alot of the wounded dogs end up getting shot when they do not recover from thier injuries.

Not for me or any dog that depends on me.

I did it in Florida. Most of the dogs get fixed with a medical staple gun right in the middle of the palmettos. not very sporting i will say but it is still scary every time you walk up to one to stick it.
