    Pamlico Sound...Im hooked

    On layout hunting that is..

This was our first attempt doing this without a guide..and now im hooked.

Christmas Eve my brother and I coudnt help but go kill a goose or 3 after Christmas in Ocean Ilse. We wernt going to be able to hunt Christmas day, so we figured what the hell and went for it..

As i posted before hand, me and my brother headed to our Hunting Club Christmas Day to chase ducks around the rest of the week.

Wednesday Morning was slowwww in the impoundment, i take that back it pretty much sucked the whole week. We set a couple dozen goose floaters and full bodys out and a dozen or so ducks. Had right many geese give us a look but wouldnt commit. Finally when we get out of the blind messing with the deeks, i look up at five canadas locked up at 50 yards and then flare...figures Ended the morning with 3 hairyheads.

We then said screw the fields and hit the sound. A little breeze that afternoon and not much flying. Scouted and found a place to set for thursday morning. Set up a diver spread and dumped the layout in. Very slow, not many ducks at all. Picked up and scouted for a couple hours. Finally decided to load up and scout another bay. Im glad we did, we found an ass of birds for the next mornings hunt. And even got a little shooting in that afternoon. It was abit different shooting green wings out of the layout.

Scouting was a must this trip. There wasnt large numbers of ducks, but enough to work with. Friday we decided to set up a little offshore. Got the rig set and it was shooting time. First bird was a Drake greenwing..imagine that. He goes down, then a pair of buffleheads join him in the sack. A scoter and bluebill would drop by here and there. Around 8 it started gettin slow so we moved on out even further. Got a large group of scoters up and set up in the area they were in. They would start filtering back here and there. After an hour or so scratched out enough to call it a morning.

    The morning and afternoon kill..

Now the hunting wasnt hot and heavy by any means but we had a good time and killed a few birds.

Thanks again JMS for the layout this week!

Im heading out in a few to scout..hunted this morning and it was piss poor. Hopefully tom. mornings hunt will have something to show for.

Gotta love a little layout action.

Considering this weather I'd say you did just fine.

    Thanks Dave

Although it was abit slow..it wasnt a bad hunt considering this years conditions.

Hopefully this cold front is pushing some birds down. Going to try to make it out there again this weekend..We'll see.
