Outdoors Without Limits- Sika Deer Hunt

The mission of Outdoors Without Limits is to help people who's disabilities limit them from enjoying a life outdoors. To do so volunteers and members are needed to help raise money and make events like this deer hunt possible.

On Sunday January 6th we will be having our first banquet of 2008 to kick off the year. Following the banquet on the 7th and 8th we will be sponsoring the Second Annual Outdoors Without Limits Assateague Island Sika Deer Hunt.

Up to 20 disabled hunters will be permitted to hunt otherwise closed areas for Sika deer at the park. Hunters will be aided by their helpers and volunteers in an attempt to harvest a Sika deer with archery equipment.

We are looking for new members, volunteers, hunters, and helpers to become part of a great thing.

Last years hunt was a great success and we look forward to making this years hunt even better.

For more information please feel free to contact me by pm or e-mail @ davidsikorski@mac.com

Thoughts on where help is needed:

Some guys will have helpers others will not so we may need someone to hang out with a guy(some will just want to be left alone and will radio if they need help) in case he hits one and it needs tracked.

Cooking at Lunch, last year it was Burgers and hotdogs by the Ranger station maybe even taking lunch out to guys if they want to stay out the whole time.

Dressing deer and dragging/carrying them to a vehicle to take them back to be weighed in.

    Someone taking pictures and video.

Checking on hunters to make sure they are ok and don't need anything.

Coming to the banquet on Sunday and helping support a GREAT CAUSE!!

Dave you are on the ball :-)

I just sent Dave a brief list of what we will need to do during the hunt

Someone mentioned a few things already all of which we will need to do.

    Cook Lunch
Track, field dress, drag/carry deer out of woods/swamp
Help Hunters with whatever they need, a lot will have helpers with them and some will not want help unless they hit one. We will have 2 way Radios, but you can bring them as well to stay in contact with each other
We will do some walking around to keep deer on the move
Just basic checking on hunters and guides to make sure they dont need anything.

Also last year a lot of the Park Staff was helping us. I got them to give me two days this year as opposed to one last year. Part of the Rangers concern was his staffing is down and he said we would need to have guys to help. Which I told him would be no problem and now seeing this thread I know we will have plenty of help.

Part of the email I recently got from the Park Ranger
The Park/Park Ranger just received an award from the National Park Service for "Innovation in providing those with disabilities access to National Parks" He said the NPS was impressed that not only did the hunt provide access, but it also targeted a non-native species. He said he wasn't even aware of this award (actually they created a new category entitled "innovation" since it didn't fit into the established categories. He said he feels that just meeting and participating with these guys involved was the real award for him.

Those of you available who may be traveling, I am working with the Grand Hotel in OC and will have a block of rooms reserved and the rate will be $44 a night for the premium rooms(Ocean View I believe, not that there is much to see in January though)

    Thanks
    Jim

PS the deer in the first pic was 76 lbs if I remember right. The Older guy(owner of Maryland Whitetail site he has MS) we wanted the pic of Patrick in it though. Patrick like the camera. He has Cerebal Palsy, this boy will make anyone change how you live your life if you spend some time with him he is a great kid.

    Marty,

I have free access already for a 3 bedroom ocean front condo for the whole weekend on 43rd street. Consider your name on one of the rooms if your interested! Maybe we can even figure some duck hunting in there some where!
