Opening day

I went out opening day this morning for the ct landowners season. What a hunt. The rest of the state does not open for 3 or so weeks. I have been doing this for 5 years now. I have not even seen a tail before the private land opens. Well we had a first in a few diffrent department. I have been getting ready for the season over the last few weeks. Sighting in buying stuff that does not work or self destructs while you are in the field. I got out of work at 4 am and went home to a shower and what not. Made it to the club for 5. I got out all my cloths spent 35 minutes spraying everything down. I drenched the cloths in scent killer??? Yea ok im not proven with this stuff yet. So I het the woods after talking with a friend at 6. Its a pretty good walk in about a half a mile or so. I had to sit on the rock I killed my buck at last year. I could here 5 owls hooting waiting for the dinner truck to stock some ditch parrots. If you dont know what one is its a pheasant. I carried my clothes in not to get to hot. I worked my way off the logging road to the rock. I set up 2 tinks bombs with some high tech code blue 40 bucks a bottle at cabelas. I spilt one on the ground. I picked it up and hung it. I put the other about 10 yards closer. Then one over my head where the rock was. Why god only knows. So. I turned on the gps to see what time it was 622. Great I have 30 minutes for things to quiet down. Snap snap. It sounded like a moose or me coming threw the woods. What the heak. No one is suppoed to be out here but me. Who is poaching where is my cell in the truck.Dam. I sat waiting for the sun to come up so I can see who it is. The noise is now about 20 yards from me. Im pissed as all get out. Im looking looking I cant see. It comes up the wall I am on. Stands there for a minute holy crap its a BUCK.He jumps the wall 15 feet from me or less. Snorts twice and smells the code blue. im sure it was really playing with his mind. He was cornfused. Just as he started his second blow. I here tink tink. From the same direction he just came from. What now. I thought back to someone poaching trying to call him back. I could here them atleast 300 yards off. They worked closer and closer. Two more bucks fighting the whole way. I have heard this one other time never seen it in reel life. It was cool as hell. So I got one buck about 25 yards from me,5 owls hooting for dinner and these two fighting buck. I finally could see them. It was close to shooting time. I got one shell out dropped it in when they where going at it. closed the chamber and got ready. Now im waiting for the shot witch is a bigger buck. One looked to be smalled because he was getting his butt kicked but never gave up. Im to the point im just going to take the bigger body deer. They where there for about 15 minutes in my eye site give or take. Im guess its about 10 of 7. A truck pulls in to stock the ditch parrots. When the deer herd the truck. They look over at the truck thats about 350 yards away. I say well there is my chance to get the gun up. Im in the process of easying the gun up and the day tiem running lights from the chevy truck you got to love um hit the woods. There by this time are back to fighting pick there heads up and walk off. Know I can count forns a 4 or five pointer and a nice 8 outside the ears. No major mass. Go walking off. Oh I got this i'll hit my new grunt tube yea. Right. It coems out sounding like a wounded zebra in some lions mouth. Great it was all messed up. Some surgery later on and I fixed it. Never saw them again. It was a great expirence. then at 8 it was an all out battle of wanting to shoot squirrles with a slug. I made up my mind I was going to sit all day. Hell or high water. I heard an old firends sister yelling at her dog about a half mile away. God was the annoying as hell. I sat and ate my sand witch and said. Im going home to sleep acouple hr and regroup an head out this afternoon. I went picked up everything. Started to walk out when I crossed the tracks of a fisher cat. Its a good thing we can only trap them. Because I would have popped it with no problem. So I had a really cool day with the 3 bucks owls and fisher. Icant wait form monday. Going to hit the same rock just a litlle earlier.

Great report! Sounds like you had a hell of a good morning in the woods! I too jacked up an attempted grunt when I was younger and lost a buck, it happens!

I hihe woods this am. I passed up another 5 pointer. It was within 20 yards. I wish I had bow tags. LOL I have 2 months to shoot a monster. I really dont want to settle for a little deer. Im looking for something with a 8 frame tall tine or 120 plus. I know two years ago. If it was brown its down. After taking a 126 whitetail last year. Im hooked on horns. I have a friend that is going to shoot this buck if he is around opening day. Thats if I dont keep seeing it. Its hard not to pull the trigger. When I grunted to him today. If he stopped it would have been over. Im glad I let his walk.Before the end of the season he will be culled out. His rack is really messed up.
