The one that got away...late report

Hunted wuth my cousin the other day, he took a shot at a doe...since our stands are only 50 yards apart...i not only saw the deer , but heard the release...( in dire need of limb savers) and impact.....looked like he smoked her, ran hard and head hunched down. I gave it a solid Hr and a half before i crept down my tree and over to his stand.....We went over to where the deer litterally rolled over a down log....and then we found it...... the arrow with about 1/4 inch of blood on the end of the shaft and NO broadhead. He was shooting expandables and clipped a branch inbetween the release and the deer....pegged her in the forward shoulder....no penetration. I should have snapped pics the whole way through.....but we were on the hunt with a questionable hit...so it was bow in hand...arrow knocked in case we jump her up close and personable. Well we did jump her and the other doe she was with, about 150 yards away and she was moving just fine.....i took a pic of the blood right before we lost it and jumped them....thats the only one....It happens to the best of us.

Wow I never seen or heard of one breaking off... heard of them opening when hitting twigs etc but not breaking off.

I have hit unseen twigs and had the arrow deflect...I would think that if the head hit something hard enough to break off the arrow flight would have been affected so bad that he would have not hit the deer... know what kind of head it was?

Not sure...but it didnt snap off, it had to have ripped the threads out of the ferrul...there was no snaped off shaft from the broad head.

it happens, shake it off and get her next year. I would not blame this on the broadhead, hitting ANYTHING before your target it most often disappointing for all involved.

I might be misunderstanding what you said, but it sounds possible that the arrow and broad head made it to the shoulder, just no penetration in the shoulder and when she rolled over the log it broke the broad head off at the arrow. It would be amazing that in flight there could be enough force to brake the broad head off and still hit its mark in the deer, but it cold happen. Was the bottom part, or the screw in part of the broad head still in the arrow?

The broad head is in the deer, it either unscrewed or ripped out of the ferrule. It was more than likely not screwed on tight enough.....one of the many reasons i like my muzzies, they punch through bone and they come with a wrench to torq em down......sucks to wound the deer but she probably will make it.

    I build steel mills.
I broke a muzzy 100 3 blade off in a does shoulder years ago. I was shooting a 80lbs set up then too. Snapped at the threads. I still have the arrow some where. Scotty.
