Now here's a first for me

I just got back from dropping 2 deer off at the butcher. Two scrawny little buttons bucks (I thought they were does). The cool thing was I only took one shot. It was 4:30 this afternoon and I haven't gotten anything for the freezer yet so I'm getting kind of desperate. These 2 little (50-60lb) does wander in from out in front - left to right. 30 yards, wind is moving right to left so I was safe there, but these guys were a little too small for my taste. That was until they lined up perfectly. I couldn't resist and squeezed one off. Once the smoke cleared (blackpowder), there were 2 deer lying just up hill from my stand - almost level from the 20' stand. When I went to gut the first one I noticed that it had a little more going on between it's legs. Felt the head and confirmed that I did indeed shoot a button. Did the same thing on the second one. Okay, now I'm pissed that I just shot 2 giant bucks in the making - oh well what can you do when you're thinning the herd. I'm sure I'll get over it.

I had to try shooting 2 with one shot. I've seen my dad do it years ago - not once but twice. The first time he didn't realize it, the second he meant to.

    Has anyone else done this?

    Thumbs up

I live in Joppa, Harford County. I have had this happen to me twice this year.

They look like does and its right before last light, so you can't tell if its a button buck

One was a very large button buck , dressed out @ 110 the other was small like yours.

My friend said not to get discouraged because everyone has made this mistake more than once.

Heading out in the morning. There is a nice 8 and a huge 12 in my area. I have only seen the 12 pointer 2 times . Once in the evening in early sept on a sunday and the other time it crossed the road @ 5 am (dark) heading to my area I will probably not see him again til next Sept.

The does have even gone nocturnal? Its been tough this last week only have seen a few. The other morning driving in there was @ 13 doe standing on the hill @ 4: 30 am , once I got dressed and in the stand they where gone. 3 hrs in the stand and nothing.

I hope my luck changes tomorrow with this front coming in hopefuly they will be moving. I have yet to shoot any bucks this year. I have passed on 22 bucks all 6 points or less and the 6 pointer has a small basket rack. Hopefully they will grow into bigger deer if nobody shoots them

We do need to thin our herd, we have too many does. I had one day when I saw over 45 doe from a morning hunt and afternoon hunt.

How has you deer been acting lately?

Congrats on the meat- Seems the deer are up all night and sleeping all day

    Phil(lily)

    Merry Xmas
