Just a quick follow up to the convsersation my wife had with you this morning.
My wife was out feeding the horses early this morning when she noticed the two horses were standing completely still and looking in the same direction with their ears held high. Then she saw the hunter with his bow. She calmly walked over to him and said in a very nice manner (seriously, she isn't against hunting at all). She said the turkeys you are trying to call are my pets and behind a fence. They are my pets. The guy was actually on our neighbors property not ours. So the guy gets up and walks away without saying a word. My wife leaves. 20 minutes later she looks over into the field and notices the horses looking in the same direction but about 20 hards to the right of where they were before. She walks over again and yells to the guy. Look, you don't need a turkey call. Just yell for Thomas, Tony, Terry, and Timmy and they will call back.
Looks like I may have to set up a camera and get some classic Jimmy Houston Type Video.
Well - its good to see how nice the folks around here really are. Jen and her friend just walked over from the field where the hunters were and couldn't believe her eyes when she saw two hunters walking our way again. The hunters got to the sign I just put up 15 minutes. As jen approached the hunters she could tell they were literally doubled over laughing. It turned out to be a father and son who were hunting with permission on our neighbors property. They said that Jen was talking to the son this morning and he was pretty scared when she approached and thats why he didn't say anything and just left. He assured Jen that they would not shoot her pets. They had no idea. So the father and son left after snapping a couple of pictures of our sign that said, Please don't shoot our pet turkeys. And one that said - Our Pet turkeys are fed a strong de-wormer and unfit for human consumption. Good to see everyone had a good laugh about it.
Bill if some of the guys on the board only new how good the turkey hunting near Tyaskin is. My guess is there are plenty wild birds courting your pets through the fence.
Bert - I see 200 turkeys a day between the old Dave's Sportshop and my house. double that many deer.
Most are on the Philips farm and the Walter Farm next to the church as your drive into tyaskin. Also across the street from the church behind the transformer. Usually see a flock there of at least 40 birds everyday. I have only seen a handful of turkeys get called into our birds. I guess its because all of the other animals scare them away. The dogs do a good job of sniffing out any new animals around.
Funny story Bill. Reminds me of a similar situation which dominated the local news a year ago of two kids hunting in a waterway creek (legally) and manged to call a pair of pet mallards (Cagney and Lacey) to their decoys and, of course, blasted them to oblivion. It was funny to observe the outrage over the youths' disrespect for these "free ranging" pets! It's not like they were wearing little outfits like the Pino donkeys or anything. I'll bet they we nice and corn fat!
