I had National Guard this weekend but was lucky enough to get out at 4:10. I drove home to New Kent which took an 1:05. Pulled the muzzle loader out, did a quick clean, loaded it, stapled a plate to a tree 30 yards away, and squeezed off. Dead center, sweet.
I usually shoot my gun before the season but I didn't think I was gonna get to go opening day. So i asked my wife if she was ready, she says yes so we pull the clothes out the scent control bags and jump in the woods.
We start by sneaking up to the edge of the field from the woods, get to the edge and two does are feeding 40 yards away. Its now 6:00pm and gets dark at 6:45. So I let my wife watch them for about 5 minutes and then I'm like, ok, time to die. I line up the cross hairs and get ready to pull, breathe out, boom. They both run off looking healthy, walk over, check for blood for 10 minutes, nothin, missed, dang.
Jump back behind the tree and start watching the field again. At 6:20, eight does walk out at 100 yards. So I'm like where is the buck, watch them till 6:30 and its starting to get dark. ok, time to shoot. Pick out the boss doe and boom. She drops on the spot.
Figures I would miss at 40 and drop'em at 100. Oh well, field dress her and off the the processor to turn the whole thing in to deer burger. I've wanted to do this for some time now but haven't shot a deer big enough to justify the cost yet this year.
Not too bad for opening day rush hunt.
