Newfoundland Report
Just got back from a great 10 day trip in Newfoundland. We flew in on Friday Sept. 9 to our plane base camp but the weather put us on hold until Sunday evening. Once in the weather was great with just a little rain and temps in the morning in the low 40's with high's in the afternoon in the 50's.
Monday morning we headed out with our guides at first light and after some bush wacking thru the spruces my guide and I arrive up onto a nice high area with several small ridges overlooking 4 small ponds. we worked around several ridges until my guide told me to hold up. As I worked over to him behind some rocks I got my first look at a Moose. It was a cow and after glassing the area we found a nice bull with only his rack showing up from behind some thick chest high spruces along a pond. The cow continued to graze in the open with no clue we were lurking from above. However the bull was not moving and we position ourselves to wait him out. After about 45 minutes the cow started working off into some brush and finally we see movement from the bull. The bull comes up from the pond and man he was nice. after looking around like he new something was up he slowly kept moving up into the clear. After about 5 minutes he finally came clear and turned broadside and the guide whispered let him have it. I chamber a bullet into the 300 Ruger Ultra Mag and slowly raised up and put the scope on the kill zone, good thing it was chilly or I would have been sweating big time, but after a nice deep breath I slowly pull the trigger and gave him the lead. What a great feeling to to see that trophy bull fall right to the ground with that first shot. After that I look at the guide and shook his hand for helping me bag my first trophy bull. The bull was 48 1/4" 18 points, the shot was 186 yards. On that same day before lunch 2 others had kills and on Tuesday we had our final bull in the morning. Here are a few pictures More to come if you like to see more. Also one of my friends bagged a nice Caribou while we were there. Last edited by Streamweaver; 09-18-2006 at 06:48 PM. |
