Me and Lil' Red are gonna christen a new rig of handcarved blocks in the am. Just finished repaint on six blacks that I had hunted with years ago. The elder Saxis Islander added a pair of mallards, four widgeon and six buffalo heads, all hand carved and painted, to the rig. For Christmas Lil' Red got a "tipping" black duck. Pretty cool to be able to take his grandson shooting over them.
Love the seeds of tradition being planted here. I will be looking forward to the pics of the deeks and three generations. Little Saxis is gettin raised right it seems. Shootem up.

I did have the pleasure of watching from 200 yards as Lil' Red called five geese in to the decoys. His calls sounded great but sometimes the shooting is not up to par. We've all missed. He, at 11, is just getting it out of his system earlier than most.
Finely carved decoys are treasured in my family, as well as many others. Many have homes behind glass doors. To me though, the most special treasures are the working decoys handcarved by the watermen and gunners(both outlaws and inlaws) before us. This thread, without a doubt, will not get the appreciation from most that it deserves. That won't take a thing away from it for me though. Great stuff and thanks so much for the pictures. I don't have to tell you to teach Lil'Saxis to cherish those "dekes".
What are they carved from?

Very nice, I just got done painting some of my old decoys and it just means that much more to me when I go to know that they look like that because I painted them. Nice pics and thanks for sharing
But you guys have my interest! Very nice work on the decoys. I am sure there is a ton of satisfaction carving and painting then watching them work.
Good Stuff, very cool...
