I have been scouting as much as possible, and will continue this week. Our impoundments are having a little trouble getting flooded, although they are huntable. Alot of fields up our way havnt even started because of it being so dry, it may help our fields alot.
Birds are starting to make it to the sound..and have seen lots of greys and teal in the swamps. Along with pintails in the fields and lake.
Leaving the 9th..dragging the boat aswell. Looking forward to killing..
I'm going!! I'll be at Cedar Island, North Bay, hopefully they'll show. I was there tuesday to help with some flounder pounds and saw lots of teal and blackheads. Shower Down!!
I was standing on the dock todat at pirates cove and saw 50-60 pintails heading to the southern. Pee island no doubt but good to see some high ducks moving in from the Norther.
Friday night Cloudy and 41 degrees, Sat. NNW breeze 15-20, chance of light rain, high temp mid 50's--- it's almost looking a little ducky. Will be on Currituck Sound w/ Swancaller.
A butt load of Canada (Geese) Migrators passing over the East Richmond area this evening heading ESE--- (James River Plantations I would imagine). Local Woodies have mostly left area (that's a good sign around here, because when they hang around in numbers, their brothers to the North seem to find no reason to migrate either.)
Good luck guys.
This will be the first yr. in 10 yrs. that I will miss opening day!!! I have class for work this wknd. that I gotta take to keep my job,but sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do!!!!!! Good Luck to all that go,and I do expect reports!!
opening day in MD on Sat and opening day in VA next Sat 11/17....this weather should have 'em moving a little bit. Saxis Islander took his son hunting last Sat on youth day and was COVERED UP in birds!
Looks like some teal showed up over the last few days. Good to see. I have a crowd this week and I hope they get some good action.Heard the swans and geese last night around 10pm flying to the south. . First time this fall I heard the word.Ill post a picture tommorow.
Very dissapointed with this weekend although it can only get better
Hunted the impoundment sat. morning. Had teal and woodies give us a look. Did not see any big ducks at all. I was out of the blind by 8:00 with 2 woodies.
Not much water in Hyde right now at all. Had a little shower when i awoke early sat. morning and it rained on us in the blind. From what i see at this point there are not many birds on the lake yet. We have about half of our fields flooded and our others are just now starting to take on water. When the birds show up we should be in good shape with plenty of food and water. Talked to severel locals and weekend hunters and the ones with water should be ok. Lots of swamps and natural ponds that havnt been dry in 10 years are dryed up.
Checked out the sound yesterday afternoon and lots of birds have showed up. Lots of surfs and commons, a few divers. Guys that have been hunting around goose creek have been slaying them along with teal. By the way we got our asses handed to us yesterday, it was rough
Hope others did well, hunting the river in the morning. Will post back.
Bandon, you sure you didn't hunt with us yesterday?
Very slow for us on Currituck Sound as well. We hunted the entire day and all we could do is 3 Bluebills (same volley), and 1 Pintail. Our only other shot all day was at a single amored Scaup that took 3 full loads and still flew off.
The birds were frankly none existant for us. I will say that some faired better than us that were in the marshes or better in the lee of the wind-- one party had 14 and another 9 or 10.
For the most part, the birds just hunkered down all day and didn't want or need to fight the wind. I can 't even speculate if any subtantal numbers have arrived yet.
It was almost dead calm until 7:15am or so when the front moved in. I would have thought that the birds would have moved a bit at daybreak, but nada. My guess is they felt the pressure change and got to where they wanted to be Friday evening--- that's my theory and I'm sticking to it
We dealt with NNW 20- 30kts all day in a floater on the windward side of the Sound all day. It sure broke out the full can of whoop ass on us--- I'm getting too old for this shit.

Scouted 3 of my spots last week. No huntable number here yet for me to mess with. There are some gads, blacks and a few mallards around. But none worth pressuring right now.
Nothing at T boro either. But the geese have found the winter wheat over the taters
