Annual Thanksgiving hunt was as good as years past and surprisingly, plenty of water.. Good times accompanied by good friends and good dog work, then headed to the house for turkey with the family. We missed the spot the ducks wanted to be in by 150 yards. Made the adjustment and still ended with eleven ducks for three guns. Had a flock of 30 wigeon with feet down in the timber and only three fell...same with a smaller group of mallards...more teal than I'd seen in the timber in a few years, we passed on several groups early with all the big ducks we saw early....should have finished out the limit with them. Great overall hunt compared to others spots I had been checking, extremely surprised by the number of birds working.
Went back after them again Saturday, two guns and the dog. Five minutes before legal had four mallards land in the blocks and swim out of sight behind beaver pond..five minutes later another group of fifteen come in, three stayed...ten minutes later another group of six and two stay..added two woodrows and a teal to end the morning...not close to the ducks we saw two days prior...full moon the culprit I believe...hope to try them a time or two more before the split ends
Im glad you all are having some success. Good to see you killing some birds Karl. Thats great to hear about the cans, im going to attempt to get out and do some sea duck hunting during the split and scout, seems that some divers have showed up in decent numbers.
The main thing i am banking on this year is late season, Jan. It always seems that early season the birds are on the North side of the lake, being located on the South side early season always consits of teal, woodies, and a handful of big ducks unless we have weather. This year with the few impoundments we are hoping to be slam full of birds by later dec. and jan when the birds get further south. If we arnt, somethings wrong. Hopefully the deer will chill out on eating the corn and beans,we re planted twice this year and one of our fields is eatin slam up again.
Saxis Islander and I (along with Max) are on here tonight.....CL checked out the Pocomoke Sound and went up on the mud and found a few divers, hopefully cold weather coming will push more down. Anyone know where the "mud" is?? By the way, Rockfish jumpin in the boat at Sandspit.
