I am from NC and I lived in Maine after getting out of the Navy. In 1995 I entered the Maine Moose lottery the first year I was a resident and drew a tag for the Jackman/Moosehead Lake Region. on the first morning I arrowed a 159 7/8 bull moose that I called in within 10 yards. Talk about a rush. Now that I am back in NC I would have to enter as a non-resident and as you stated there is not much of a chance to be drawn.

My father actually won a tag in the Maine lottery years back. I think it was in the early 90's, maybe mid 90's. Him and a buddy went up and they shot what was the largest moose shot in Maine with a pistol. I think it was 56" or so. I'll see if I can have him send me a pic.

He's applied every year since and still has yet to win again.

It was a lot cheaper back then though. I think I remember it being about $1500.

HUNTING MOOSE IN MAINE IS A DREAM COME TRUE. I DO KNOW A GUY WHO DREW ON HIS FIRST CHANCE AND BAGGED A 60" TO BOOT, SOME PEOPLE ARE JUST SO LUCKY.


YOUR RIGHT ABOUT THAT $1500 HUNT PRICE, SEE IT IS A WHOLE DIFFERENT THING IF YOU DRAW, YOU CAN GET A HUNT WITH AN OUTFITTER WITH ALL OF THE BELLS AND WHISTLES FOR $2000 TODAY BUT YOU HAVE TO DRAW THAT'S THE PROBLEM.

Do you have to go with a guide or outfitter? Or can you hunt by yourself if you draw a tag?

As a resident you are obviously not required to hire a guide. Not 100% sure about non residents but I feel about 98% sure that you are not required to hire one. As stated the hardest part about the moose hunt is getting the coveted tag. The rest just requires scouting your zone and looking for a spot that contains a trophy. I learned to moose call by watching a video tape that I bought at LL Bean. If you are archery hunting it makes it more difficult if you are the one calling as the moose normally come directly at you. Maine has a great moose herd. The bull that I arrowed was not the one I had been scouting but nevertheless was a nice one.
