They'll stop and beat the hound's back, figure out where they want to go and go from there. We try not to shoot young bear or sow's. By being up close it afford's you the opportunity to know if it's big/small, boar/sow. We are very selective. This year just happened to be a banner year for us, we took big boar's only. The only exception was a big sow that the "land-owner" wanted to take for his first bear. No small bear, no sow's with cub's, no wounded or crippled bear. If it is a bear that you want to take, you are close enough to make it a quick, clean kill. Don't get me wrong here, that's not saying that smaller bear or sow's don't get run, we just don't take them.
Come along for a moment or two: Just put yourself slipping in on your hand's and knee's, through stuff so thick the sun can't come through. Cat claw's, briar's have got your face, neck and ear's looking like you came out of a razor fight. The bear is bayed up just ahead of you, worst racket you've ever heard in your life. You are ten yard's away and can't see a thing, you've got to get closer. You have to be absolutely quiet, you must play the wind or you're gonna get "busted". You slip in closer, now your at ten feet, still can't get a good look. All you can see is a dog flash ahead of you, a blur of black, now and again. You can hear the teeth popping (I know you've heard that before), you hear a dog get too close and it get's slapped. Still got to get alittle closer, you move ahead on your knee's gun in hand. You are now six feet away from the biggest adrenalin rush you've ever had, you think wow I'm here!!! Finally you see that it is a "good" boar, He's the ONE you really have wanted to take. You've waited to get in close like this for year's. He's got a huge/wide head, all you can think is "God he's awesome"!!! Just at that moment he break's and is running straight at you, 6 hound's right on his heel's. "Oh Crap I can't move, I can't get out of the way", it's too thick!!!! Now's when you lay on your belly as flat as you can, put your hand's over your head/neck and HOPE he keep's on running over top of you without taking a bite. Now it's time get up, clean your pant's out and realize just how close you were to the greatest animal in North America. Doesn't matter whether you "took" him or not, you've just proved to yourself and your fellow hunter's (who are very selective about who hunt's with them, it's an earned priveledge for the most part)that you've got what it take's. Do I have your attention now??? If you get the chance to do this one day, be sure to drop me a note and tell me what you think. I'd be willing to bet a pretty piece of change that it will be one of the "highlight's" of this life the Good Lord gave you. It sure has been for me. Frank
