I had the pleasure of hunting the Missouri rifle opener this weekend. All weekend it was perfect weather for deer hunting with mid-20's in the morning and intermittent snow showers. Saw numerous activity Sat. and Sun. and passed over several nice bucks as the weekend wore on waiting for the one.
Sunday afternoon I was sitting on the ground after slipping along a steep ridge top glassing and figured why not try some rattling since the doe chasing seemed to be at it's peak. I rattled a fairly mild sequence with a rattle bag for about a minute and sat back for about another minute and a stampede ensued around me.
From behind me up the ridge a buck was crashing through the leaves and I turned to get in position for a shot. Seconds later from the way I had been facing another deer was coming up the opposite hill as well and it got there first. A pretty nice looking six but not a shooter hopped into the road looking for the fight. Moments later from the way I had turned, a nice eight flew over the top and bound across the road after the six and took off chasing it down the hill.
I jumped up to see if I could get a shot over the hill down into the deep draw they left into and the eight stopped long enough for a broadside shoulder shot and it was over. After I went down the hill to check out my buck another bigger ten point came over the road top looking down at me and bolted back the way he came.
It was pretty fast action there for a minute and I had my buck. Not a Missouri Monarch but big enough to win the big buck pool in my group of fourteen hunters. Here he is.
