I took my two daughters Mackenna and Melissa and my cousins son Jake on their first official hunt last Saturday. All three kids have spent plenty of time with us in goose blinds so they were all very comfortable with goose pits, decoys and yes, dead geese. This was the first time they got to shoot as they all passed the hunters safety course this fall.
The geese have been using this field for several days so it was only a matter of time before they came off the river. The first group of about 20 came around 7:45 and decoyed perfectly. After a few shots Melissa knocked down her first goose at about 20 yds. The geese kept coming, about 10 groups of 10 to 50 geese. After lots of laughs and missed shots we wound up with 4 geese, Mackenna killed 2 (her limit) and Melissa and Jake each got one.
Afterwards, we went down to the river and let them shoot clay targets and then took them to breakfast. I spend a lot of time hunting and fishing but I have to say this will go down as one of the most rewarding days I have had.
good thing is they didn't seem to bother the geese, bad thing is if it was 25 years ago since I had a pair I'm gettin old. They brought back alot of childhood memories.
