Mass. Duck Hunting

Went out with Capt. Jack yesterday. I wouldn't call it a five star resort but the accommodations were amazing. Capt. Jack donated a hunt to the Ducks Unlimited Chapter down here in VA, my friends dad bought it at the auction and him and I set off for Boston Sunday.

We arrived to a newly constructed addition on Capt. Jack's house full of mounts of every kind of duck and also moose, bear, caribou, and others. Capt. Jack asked if we liked sushi and of course we responded with YES! So out he pulled some BFT he caught last Tuesday and we dug in for appetizers, then had spaghetti, then had sushi rolls for dessert.

We woke up at 4:30 and headed for the harbor. The pictures tell the rest of the story. We had our limit by 10 am and were headed back to VA at noon.

And yes my wife with went me, she said she didn't want to hear of the action second hand, she wanted to see it.

Capt. Jack said when he heard we were driving up from VA to hunt one morning and then go home, he thought we were crazy, after our hunt, we confirmed it!

We could not have had a more experienced guide. His website is http://www.coastlineguideservice.com/feedback.htm

the guide just grabbed the lab by the collar and picked him up enough to get his front paws on and then pulled in until he got the back legs on and the dog jumped in, it was more like an assisted climb.

His dogs name was Gunner, he was eight years old, and had two or three retrieves over 100 yards away. He had to swim back to the boat against the current and pushed through it. it was awesome to watch Capt. Jack work the dog left, back, and right and when he got to far out the dogs nose would take over and he would just swim down wind until he caught scent, and b-line for the duck.

It is a huge part of the hunt for me when you have a well trained dog. Gunner would sit or lie down at the front of the boat in between retrieves. he was a great dog

You can see the look in his eyes...that boy loves to hunt. I agree, watching a good dog retrieve is the best part of the hunt. I love the name...I had a "Gunner" about 20 years ago...he was black, but he loved to hunt too. Thanks!
