I hunted there before & after it became public. Know some awesome spots in that place and outside the impoundment as well. Perhaps we could team up before the end of the season for a hunt. I've still gpt my cork decoys for those puddle duck/widgeon spots.

Sound like a plan. I haven't hunted there since about 99 and am looking forward to getting back.

If I had room for three in the boat you could join me on saturday. Looks like the weather is gonna be warm, but ducky.

Is a black duck a summer mallard? We do have them year round....Ya'll ever hear of a Puldeau.. I've eaten them, don't even pluck them....pull them by the feet and out she comes...

    Make it 6!!!

Tenacious.....you might get some migratory Black Ducks, but they're mostly centered around the atlantic from VA north. There are of some in the other flyways, but not a bunch.

The Black Duck is also known as the Black Mallard. Before the Mallard populations went nuts in MD it was the most popular duck here. They nest here and many never leave. I jumped maybe 20 the other day eating the snails that Randy mentioned. Right in the middle of the marsh on a flood tide...no water to speak of.

What you have down there that you call a summer mallard is probably a mottled duck. They look a little like a hen mallard and black duck mixed.

There's no mistaking a true black duck. They are huge and are very dark. Only purple on the speculum....NO WHITE. The hen has an olive bill the drake has a yellow one.

Dave, I take it you pulled a lottery slot. The Deal Impound hasn't been the best the last few years but on opening day you should do OK if you can find some breathing room. I may head down that way at the end of the week and hunt off the impound near Monie Bay. I know a walk in honey hole that usually produces.

heres a true black duck hen, evidenced by the olive drab bill....taken just off the ICW in a freshwater pond in NC. blacks are my favorite ducks, by a long shot.

I did draw, and hope to avoid the typical public hunting BS, but we'll see.

I'm heading down there in the morning to refresh my memory and devise a plan.

Bert I'll let you know what I see.
