In the market for a new Waterfowl Jacket.

I finally wore out my old Browning Duck Commander, it does not keep the rain out anymore, might as well not be wearing it.

I am in the market for a new one.

    What I want:

A shell with no insulation, as I like to layer underneath and don't like a bulky coat.

    Waterproof, breathable, hood.

    Short, very short waist length.

    Any suggestions?

Gore tex is the way to go. I just got this one b/ of similar reasons you stated

    http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/te...233&hasJS=true

I hunted Thurs w/ just the shell in 55 deg temps and
Fri in 40 deg w/ 25-30kts of wind with the whole jacket and was very comfortable both times. It is short so unless you go deep it will stay dry w/ water up to your waist.

Also, running back into the wind yesterday I took a lot of spray and waves over the boat and was bone dry when I got back to the ramp. My dog was not.

I don't know why I waited so long to get goretex but I'm sold and the versatility of this jacket makes it usable from 60 deg temps down to 0. Good luck.

Each to his own, I recon. I have the exact same Cabela's jacket that DirtyJ refers to, and don't care for it at all. It's well made, but the "brush buster" fabric is noisey as hell and very aggrivating while hunting. The cut is fine for a wading jacket but you will have to put grommets in the side pockets so water can drain out if wading.
I tell ya, the best ducking jacket I have is a cheap Remington thing I got from Wallmart. At It was 100% waterproof for about 3 seasons but leaks now in a heavy rain--- I just carry my light weight Olive Grudens jacket if its calling for rain.

I've been happy with Drake gear.

It's not a short jacket, but their stuff is top notch.

If you look around I'm sure you can find it cheaper than what they list it for on the home page.

Actually that is the one I had my eye on. Have a Drake Vest, Maybelle has a Drake Vest, and I have a McCallister Jacket (same company), all great products.

Dave, how heavy is the cloth, they market this thing as a light jacket, is it truely waterproof?

I just got the drake LST jacket in the old school camo pattern. Its got pretty much everything you listed but it does have a really warm thick liner which you could always take out and its a nice jacket just to wear around. I love the outer shell though i think it has 10 pockets on the front which come in handy and it has some shell pockets that will stay open which also have drains. I bought it off of the drake website for 200 but im sure you could find it somewhere for cheaper.

The one I have is very light and is as waterproof as non rubber can be.

It's the perfect outer layer IMO.
