MD youth day....Eden, MD...6:45 am...six does come in the field at 110 yards...Parker watches intently waiting for their "boyfriend" to chase after them...HOLY &$%^!!!!!!!!!!!!! I count twelve through the Bushells and can't count em all for the thick neck in the way and the early morning fog...That cheap ass scope on the Savage .243 won't pick up enough light for him to take a clean shot at 115 yards....He puts the gun down..That gets fixed at Wink's before the evening hunt..
Depression sits in as we wait for him to re-emerge from the woods....Depression...deep dark depths of depression based on what could have been...
Lasted all of three minutes when a stout nine pointer, head down and slobbering comes trotting down the row of beans from upwind. Parker gets set...I whistle and the beast stops broadside at 40 yards...As I turn to tell him to take him the crack of the rifle sends the 170 pounder jumping straight up then dashing towards the woods. "I missed him!", Parker said as the buck crumpled in the bean field just fifty yards from where he was initially shot. High fives and yelling were kept to minimum deliberately cause that big sumbitch is still roaming nearby...no need to give him a free education...hopefully we'll see him again.
At 7:10 am I sent the text to my hunting buddies that , "We're Done here...meet you back at the shed." Cleaned and hung by 7:30am.
Perfect youth day!!! Son learned alot, I learned more...
