kimber 7mm08
buying son's first rifle. Would the 7mm08 be ok for starter rifle for varmints and deer ?

I think that would depend on the age and size of your son as well as his shooting experience.
I would think if he is at least 10-12 and has experience shooting, that would be a fine caliber to start with.
The round is necked down from the .308 so it's still going to have a bit of a punch. If he doesn't have a whole lot of shooting experience or is smaller/younger than 10-12, you might want to shy over towards the .243/.25-06 range.

Any thing "kimber" will do. I'm not a fan of buying a gun for the age thing though. If he's big enough to handle a rifle of that caliber, let him grow up with what he'll be using later. Confidence in the weapon is every thing. That is unless money isn't a factor. Frank

Yep, your gonna need stitches
My son has been shooting his 7mm-08 (browning stainless stalker) since he was 6 years old, he has taken 5 deer with it. Friends have bought their boys about every other smaller calibers and just can't get situated. My son just keeps killing deer.
