I don't know WTF is going on but here is a hunting report

Happy New Year everyone. I spent New Year weekend up at the hunting camp in SW Mississippi. Libby, Alden and his girlfriend Sydney beat me up to the camp on Friday. We spent a rainy new years eve at members camp that has a big covered porch. had lots of fried fish and booze.

slept in Saturday morning and everybody ate lunch down at the same members camp. he said he wasn't doing a night supper and a lunch the next day anymore. he was wore out.

Libby wasn't sure if Sydney could spend another night so i just decided to hang around with them. they ended up spending the night.

i hunted close to the camp Sunday morning so i could come in early a.m. to see them off. saw two does. Sunday evening the wind was blowing pretty hard so i went to my new stand that is high and comfortable, millenium lock on. i can see almost 300 yards to the west and 120 yards to the east. I thought with the rut about to start i might see some chasing going on. nothing

I took Monday as my holiday instead of Friday. Friday in the 70's and rain, Monday in the 20's. Well that was the right decision! I killed this nice buck at 7:55 Monday morning.

by the kill records over the last 4 years, the best time is the 1/9-1/11. so the best may be yet to come. I will be there this weekend and might take Monday and Tuesday off. the pressure is off with killing the nice buck. but i saw a bigger one last year.........

Our season is all but over for bucks. I've seen a few that have lost an antler or two, and the shooters have been doing a good job of hiding.

Don't you all have a late rut down that way that should be going on right now?

yes Dave our rut is just really getting underway. the graph shows the number of deer killed per day on our lease over the last 4 years. you can see that most of the kills that aren't due to the increased number of hunters ( holiday weekends) is in January.
