Living in West Milford I see bears all the time, the kids don't even flinch any more when we see them. We see more bears than deer. Its become a serious problem and they need to be culled.
We have Big Male (I'm guessing around 400-500lbs) in our neighborhood that just isn't concerned with human interaction any more... My neighbor walked up to it and started blowing an air horn and it didn't move.
Had a sow & 3 cubs walk 5' from my front door in the fall. With 3 kids under the age of 7 and 9yr old golden with a bad hip, I am concerned for my family. Its only a matter of time...
I don't want them all dead, but the ones that are not afraid of humans (aka Hunters) will be the first culled, it's natural selection. Those that are smart will go deeper into the woods were there is less pressure and human presence. The last time NJ had a Bear hunt, the number of bear/human interactions the following year dropped significantly.
Good luck to those who go looking for bear in December!
