    Hog Hunting Report

We hunted on Wednesday 3/9 through Friday 3/11.

We (4 of us) arrived in South Carolina after the LONG 11 hour drive around 4:00pm on Tuesday March 8. We checked in at the Lodge. After short briefing, Danny, the owner of Cypress Creek informed us that they had 2-3 days of high 70’s low 80’s the week before. This caused the hogs to go nocturnal and that during the morning hunts there was a slim to none chance that we would see a hog. The afternoon hunts were producing but nothing too good. They told us we could shoot until then van got to us. So if we saw one, and could make it out in the scope we were to shoot! So we went off to shoot our guns at the range. We always shoot just to make sure nothing got bumped on the drive down. Everyone’s guns were fine.

On Tuesday night a group of hunters came back. Out of 7 hunters only one of them saw anything. She shot and hit the hog but it ran off and they didn’t find it.

Wednesday morning at 5:00 was out wake up call. We got up, ate something and off to the stands. No hogs were seen. But everyone did see and hear the spectacular show of Turkeys. Only one of us saw any deer. Back to the Lodge for some R&R and Lunch.

Wednesday after lunch we headed back out with the forecast not looking promising. We got to the stands with what I would guess as a 15-20 knot wind with gusts up to 30 knots. Thank God the stands were tower stands and not ladder stands hooked to a tree!!! The wind blew from the time we got into our stands until 1 hour before dark when it started to rain… HARD! It rained for 30 – 45 minutes and then stopped right before dark. I am watching my feeder and food plot and all of a sudden there were 6 pigs standing under the feeder. I pulled the gun up and… They were all small. The lodge has a limit of 50 lbs. They tell you to compare them to the size of a 5 gallon bucket. They were close. I decided I would not shoot hoping a larger one would follow. I watched them and they went on their way. Then it got dark around 7:05. At 7:15 I hear a shot. I was the last to get picked up and find out my one buddy killed a nice 130-140lbs. boar. We head back to the lodge for dinner and bed.

Thursday morning was more of the same. Turkeys, Deer, Wind, and Rain.

Thursday evening was more of the same except no deer. I did have the opportunity to watch a snapping turtle roam this small swamp puddle looking for frogs and such.

Friday Morning was again more of the same.

Friday Evening… the last chance… We head to their river property (which was previously too muddy and flooded out to get to. They drive the van in so far and then we loaded onto a trailer pulled by a 4 wheeler to go back in the rest of the way. We all get situated in our stands. Around 5:00 I hear a shot. Around 6:00 I hear another shot. And around 7:00 I hear a third shot. The first shot sounded much different than the last 2 so I figured it was 2 different guns. I did not see anything again, other than a deer right at dark. I was the third person to get picked up. I find out it was my dad that shot all three times. 3 shots 3 kills. All pigs were right at the 50 lbs. mark. No one else saw anything.

Saturday morning we got up and started the long drive back to PA.

Once again, it was an awesome time and I am looking forward to going back.

I will post some pics later.
