hard earned public land bird

We have had a tough year so far. The hogs had the upper hand at least for a while and so did the turkeys. We got to hunt the first two weekends and then had to take a break while my wife had surgery. We got a late start leaving because of work and it was 3:00AM before we got settled in the motel bed with the clock set for 5:00AM. It went off but I just rolled over. We got up at 7:30 had breakfast and went to look for sign. We found a little, let Kay off there and I got to my area at the crack of 10:30. Sounds like lazy turkey hunting to me. Things were slow, Kay had one hen about 10:45 and then nothing for either of us till this 2 yr old tried to sneak in on me at 1:30. He was within range when I first saw him but my gun was laying on the ground. I let him come on to 30 yds and by then I was lined up and the heavy #6s did their job well. Kind of thin in the beard dept. but should be good on the grill. About 3PM, Kay had a chance when another gobbler snuck in on her and they seen each other at 35 yds about the same time. It was kind of thick where she was and the gobbler put a dirt mound between them on his exit. He's lucky.





I sure hope it's Kay's turn tomorrow.

UP HERE THE BIRDS HAD A EXTREME WINTER AND HAVE ME WONDERING IF THE WINTER KILL REALLY DID A NUMBER ON THEM. DON'T SEE MANY BIRDS AT ALL AND ALL IS SILENT IN THE WOODS...
