    Grasshopper scores

    Yesterday was MD's Bow opener.

Grasshopper...aka...John took me to his doctors house in the Howard County suburbs to help thin the population.

We have a double stand set up there. They are two lock ons that face 180 degrees from each other. If it's on your side it's your deer.

Morning light came and a few deer started moving around. They pushed the the other side of a clearing in the yard and fed on nuts/acorsn that had been falling all morning.

Finally a lone medium doe gave john a nice 15 yd broadside shot and he let one fly.......WHACK....it hits a LOG....

    MISS #1 in the books.

He move around too much and scares the doe back into the thick of the woods. Damn rookie couldn't handle the pressure. Meanwhile I'm laughing my ass off and giving him as much shit as I can muster without making too much noise.

As we left his house on the way to the hunt I called him a rookie and was immediately told that he's not a rookie, but a killing machine....

A little time passes, and 4 spotted fawns end up under the tree. Licking the climbing sticks and looking at them through the stand platform. John got out his phone and started filming them and spitting on them. It was funny to say the least.

Eventually a big doe wandered in from the right and John got ready for his shot. I had a shot at this one too, but didn't want to shoot over John's shoulder, it's just not safe.

He stood and drew his bow about 30 seconds early and then rushed the shot as she walked away. The arrow w/ a lit knock flew 6" in front of her chest and the whole herd disappeared.

The ensuing conversation went something like....

    D:"nice shot killer"
    J:"FU"
    D:"Hey Robin Hood, been practicing?"
    J:"FU"
    J:"I F'n hate hunting, I quit"

After that we called it a day and headed to work.

John decided he could get out of work by 2:30 and met me for the afternoon hunt at my lease on the eastern shore.

After a stop for some thermacell pads and dinner, we were in our trees by 5. John had his first deer show up within 30 min and finally stuck an arrow in a big doe by 6:30.

I saw a bunch of does, yearlings, and one small buck, but never had a shot.

John's doe broke the arrow off, but the rage had already taken out both lungs and she piled up on the edge of the marsh.

We found her as a light drizzle started to fall and the mosquitos really turned it on.

Overall it was a successful first day, and I continued my "guiding" success w/ the "grasshoppa"

He's still a rookie, but is becoming pretty darn deadly. That's deer #8.....6 of which I have put him on.
