Well I took the later part of last week to relax and do some huntin and fishin, thursday evening found me perched in my favorite spot for Delaware's early muzzle loader season. Light was growing dim as the first brown bodies approached my spot and I could see that the 2 where small yearlings, as they made there way along I saw movement further back and a nice sized doe approached, as I slid the Omega in to place and cocked the trigger I saw another coming so waiting to see what it was as it grew darker turned out to be a small spike. We like to let the smaller bucks get bigger so I went back to look for the doe but to my surprise the 2 yearlings had approached my stand and as they got to my walk in path one snorted and sent all 4 deer packingguess I didn't use enough deer shit cover scenbt per Box's video
Oh Well first hunt of the year was great. Friday morning found me back in my stand waiting for daylight and as the morning passed it was like many morning hunts in my area the deer just weren't moving so I headed for the marina. I got there in time to catch my nephew and we decided we would fish the incoming tide until afternoon then I would head back for another evening hunt.Thayt was a great idea, we proceeded to catch and release a dozen stripers and around 14:00 I said lets make one more drift as the tide was about peak and bamalama a nice 31" striper in the boat so we had a keeper to eat. When we took the boat back in I told him he caught the keeper he cleans the boat LOL I said I will go get the red meat to complete the poor mans surf and turf.As I drove back for the evening hunt I felt a great deal of satisfaction with the last 24 hours and said to myself I sure hope the deer are moving ahead of the cold front, well to say they where would be a lie, I waited in the stand from 15:30 till 18:20 without seeing anything but one hungry grey squirrel and as I was getting ready to call it a night "Crack" I heard something coming from the thicket, I figured it was one of my hunting buddies heading in by my stand to meet up with me but to my surprise I saw a large body deer step out into a clearing 65 yards away.I took a brief look at the head gear and took about a 1/10 of a second to find a shoulder hair to split BOOOOOOmmm he ran off behind the cloud of smoke but I was sure my hit was good. Decision time go back for help or take a quik look before it got to dark, well the urge to look was like a kid at Christmas as I eased over to the spot I saw the splatter and lung hunks that I expected so decided it would be a short track, and it was a mere 50 yards give or take and there he layed. As I prepared for the trip out of the woods I realized that it had gotten dark to the point that I was a bit disorriented from the tracking and decided it was my turn to call my buddies for help rather than hopelessly dragging a deer through the woods trying to find my path out, they arrived with a deer caddy and we carted my prize to the truck.
Not a huge buck but a prize for my effort and the completion of the surf and turf Friday the 13th. Saturday was a short day offshore with family and 2 friends we snuck in a great day with nice weather and some Mahi for our food collection and back at the dock early to enjoy the evening out. Great weekend for me and I am guessing the end of my offshore adventures time to switch to inshore action.
