So I skun out and hung my 8 pointer from last fall out in the work shop and never got around to boiling it down for an european mount. Kinda freaky looking with his eyes all sunk in and shit, Where do I go from hear? beatles? Acid? Boiling? Leave to the flies this spring? What say youse guys?
I did my first this past year, got some pointers from here as well, so not all of this is solely my ideas.
Remove the hide, eyes, and as much meat as you can. Get around the antlers as much as possible.
I wrap the antlers in foil to help protect them from the boiling water.
You will need a pretty large pot, I used a cut down lard can and a turkey fryer burner. I add some Dawn dishsoap, I found it helps to cut the fat and you get less "yellowing" effect. (I used to boil the skull cap/antler). Set the skull in the water, ensure the antlers stay just out of the water.
I let it boil for about 30 minutes.
Let it cool, guess you don't have to but I did.
I took a few zip ties and tied the skull to a chain link fence and hit it with a pressure washer (awesome tip from here!)
Takes about 30 minutes to blast everything off and out but sure beats cutting it off.
I was really leaning toward the beetles but shipping them in the winter is risky. In addition you really need to start the beetle set-up takes a few weeks to get them established from what I read. Storing them in the winter could be an issue as well.
