FREAK NASTY Jr - MD STYLE!!!

I attended BOX's Rigging Seminar earlier this Fall and learned first hand about the legend of the "Freak Nasty Buck" that Box and Mark have been watching in Ohio. BOX showed me a lot of the footage they have of the BIG FREAK! It is awesome to say the least.
Well, I was bow hunting this past Friday evening here in MD and found a little "Freak Nasty" action myself!!! Soooo, here’s my story!!!

I headed into the woods and got on stand around 4:30pm...I wasn’t sure if I was going to meat hunt or trophy hunt tonight since the pre rut was kicking in…I thought about it and decided I would trophy hunt due to some good sign I saw working my way to the stand…about a half hour goes by and I see my first deer coming towards me...a small spike buck that works his way towards me...then another buck works his way towards me, a nice big 6 point that is out past his ears but still a young buck...several more does and yearling worked their way to me and I now I have 15 deer feeding all around me…they are all relaxed and moseying all around each other feeding.

The six pointer and the spike play around a little bit and start pushing each other around a little and engage in some light sparring…the 6 pointer shows proves his dominance and is left alone by the spike.

All the deer are now eating nicely together as another deer approaches the crowd, unnoticed by the others. I saw the huge body approaching but didn’t notice much of a rack that one would expect for a deer of this size. Well, it’s because he doesn’t have much of a rack to speak of…It’s FREAK NASTY Jr!!!

I guess Freak Nasty Jr was a little pissed that nobody else acknowledged his presence…I saw his body swell up as he inhaled and thentighten up as he exhaled and let out a DEEP and LOUD……GRRRRUUUUUNTTT!!! Boy did the deer scatter! I mean they all took off running without ever looking back!!! It made the hair on my arms stand up it was so loud!!! The group of does and young bucks all ran about 50 yards and stopped to see WHO had came by! They all ended up gathering back around to feed and they all stayed clear of Freak Nasty Jr…I didn’t have a shot on him but everyone was relaxed again so I sat and patiently waited for an opportunity to present itself…

I saw another deer approaching and ole’ Freak Jr. saw him too…It was a nice, tall racked 8 pointer(about 19” inside spread) that Freak Jr didn’t like coming into HIS area…they lightly sparred and pushed each other around and the 8 pointer ran off behind me…again no shot to take…Freak Jr proved his dominance and stood there looking around when I heard more deer moving in behind me…a few grunts sounded through the woods as both Freak Jr and I both spun our heads around to see who else had come by…I couldn’t see the other deer but I could hear the grunting and some light sparring…next thing you know, ALL HELL BREAKS LOOSE!!! Some loud grunting, some heavy antler clashing, sticks breaking, leaves rustling…and off goes Freak Jr to join the fight…more clashing of antlers…more loud grunting…mores leaves rustling and sticks breaking…then all of a sudden it’s quiet, not a sound to be heard…………..then………..GGGRRRRUUUUUUNNNTTTTT!!!!.....next thing you know, a bunch of deer are high-tailing it out of there and they all run out of sight……So now I’m on stand thinking something BIG must have come in behind me and was fighting the eight pointer, then spooked everything away and ran off after them…now there all gone and I didn’t get to see what it was……it’s quiet again and nothing is around….then I a hear a faint noise coming from behind me… I hear something walking slowly…something is coming towards me……it’s getting louder as it approaches the tree I’m in…well, well, well, whatta ya know….out from behind me comes ole’ Freak Jr…. he must have proven his dominance again ‘cause he is the only one to return….he takes a few steps and stops about 5 yards from the base of my tree, looking around to see if anyone else wants to play… I waited for him to take a few more steps…he takes about 5 steps and turns a little as I draw my bow…he takes a couple more steps and stops about 15 yards away….I release my arrow, hitting him hard with a perfect lung shot…he runs out about 50 yards and drops over….YEAHHHHHHH!!!!! I GOT HIM!!!!!!!!

Mr. MD FREAK NASTY Jr....a crazy little rack...dressed out at 196 lbs with his snout still touching the ground; it was a fixed hanging scale and we couldn't raise it to get him off the ground completely...
