"forget the wind, just hunt"
I know most of you have seen the commercials, heard the slogan. Well here's my opinion. No, you didn't ask for it but I will give it free anyway. That slogan was no doubt coined by a call maker. Probably a "box" turkey call maker cause they are loud and carry sound well on windy days. So use his call whenever you get a chance to hunt, windy or not. I think some other venders just "adapted" the phrase for their product. HEAR THIS, if you forget the wind while hunting bowhunting hogs, you can forget the hogs, or at least the close encounters with them. We went again this weekend and tried a new area. Since posting pictures of the bike trips, the place has gone from serene to what must have been similar to hosting the Tour de France since we were there last. I just knew from the all the bike tracts, Lance Armstrong and his e'nterouge would be just around the next turn. We doned our hip boots and struck out for parts unknown. Crossing the 4th swamp, in thigh deep water, I tripped on a root or something and "down goes Fraizer". Camera number two submerged in the dark waters. My hip boots filled, wallet soaked but it would be an hour before the horror set in that my toilet paper was wet too. Enough prep, on with the hunt. Once reaching dry land, I had only moved maybe 100 yds when the rustle of brush caught my attention to the right. At that point I had the wind in my face but the hogs were on the move and getting by me, putting them down wind. I spot a patch of black only 15 yards through the reeds and quickly draw. I need him to move just a little to get a shot. I get my wish, sorta, as I feel the wind chill my wet shirt from wrong side. The swamp explodes and hogs are going in all directions. One large boar has hit the water and is swimming dead away from me. There is no shot. I briefly think about trying to catch the sight on camera but then there was that submersion test the camera failed just a few minutes earlier. I put my arrow back in my quiver and push on. An hour later, with the WIND light and variable, I get busted by a group of hogs from 150 yds away. Nothing but scurring pig tails and flying mud. I circle the end of the island and start working my way back. It's about 1:00 and getting hot and very still. I ease along looking under palmettos trying to see one in the bed before he sees me. This is much like grouse or quail hunting without a dog. When you least expect it, the woods come unglued. There must have been a dozen in this group, scattering to both right and left. I guess they didn't know what I was cause for 20 minutes I have hogs within 15-20 yards but can't see anything but one little 50 lber. I know there are much bigger ones here from the deep growls uttered when I interruppted this sleeping pile of pork. I can see brush moving but can't make out anything to shoot at. They slowly fade away, another chance blown. I ease on and only 100 yds later a sow busts out and heads over the hill. I draw and move my pin in front of her nose but her 6-8 little pigs following keeps her safe from my pusuit. No hogs died on this hunt, but none have to for it to be a success.

Man I love the stories. Pig on the run with a bow. That would be epic. The next kill will mean that much more now that a few have gotten away.
