Got a call last night when I was in WalMart Christmas shopping from a church buddy asking if I wanted to go hunting. This guy has thousands of acres from his dad to hunt on the river near my house and I have been asking him to go for years now. So I couldn't turn it down, even though it was late and I wanted to go deer hunting in the morning.
Get there at 6:10 and we walk down to this small pond they have built next to the river. The pond is avergaing 3 ft deep and stuff has grown up in it everywhere, looks like a beaver pond that would fill up with wood ducks.
This guy doesn't hunt much so I brought the decoys and he asked if I would call. No problem. I asked him what kind of ducks were in there and he said he thought some wood ducks. I was like ok, calling should be easy. I reach for my call in my bag and....its in my cold weather coat because I just got back from 20 degree arkansas. oh well, just wood ducks...
Shooting time comes and no ducks. No different than my Sunday in Arkansas. Then at 6:50 two come in, we drop them both. followed by a single, dusted. followed by three, shot them all. followed by a single, smoked. then a pair, dusted. Then it was over at 7:00.
We sat 50 yards apart so when he walked up I asked him what kind of ducks he shot and he was like i think some mallards. I looked, all gadwalls. We then talked about duck species and I gave him a short lesson on how to identify just like someone did for me a long time ago. It felt almost as god as then hunt. We were both extremely happy with what just happened.
7 drakes and 2 hens and at work 30 minutes away at 8:00
