Thumbs down First Trip to the Swamp Sucked...

Well it was one of those hunts from hell this morn... Its a tough call some times what to do... Pigs can't see worth a damn but they can wind you worse than any deer ever could. So you get in the dilemma of loading up the Deet to thwart the skeeters or just man up.
I decided to man up and I picked the wrong morning for the macho shit... Un friggin bearable would be an understatement. Sounded like I was sitting on the track at an Indy car race... I was pretty well dressed but if there was open skin there was a a dozen blood sucking bastards per square inch having at it...
With all the grade A hemoglobin being systematicly removed from me I got chuckling pondering a question. Since they feed all the soon to be babies with my DNA, I wonder how many little skeeters are growing moustaches, big noses, and off color demeanor...
About first light the first little piggie crossed "the opening" and two more followed on its tail. Next came a legal sized one but I decided to let it walk in hopes of something bigger. Last year I made the mistake of blamming one out of the gate like that and filled my tag only to find the next two were much bigger. Though I blammed them I had to give them to friends who still had open tags.
Another just legal one came out and a short. I again held up. Suddenly there was a bright flash and KAABLAMMM so close I could feel the heat. I thought for a split second I had been shot then realized it was lightning hitting a radio tower maybe sixty yards behind me...
That prompted me to head back to the car. While the storm carried on, I figured I'd go for a drive and scout the place as it was my first trip out there this year. I saw the score board from bow season. Good deer tally but way low pig count. In twenty three years of hunting this place I never saw it more crowded. The places that usually had two or three buggy trailers were stuffed and more along the roads... I left the windows open but I heard very little shooting.
I went back to my original spot as the weather eased up. The skeeters were still there but no life. The wind direction had chnged and now I was in the flight path for PBIA and the noise just made a miserable morn even worse. Finally waived the white flag. At the check station only one pig and no deer had come out. I rolled up the windows and headed back to Castle Deep...
Pouring with rain as I write this. May give it a go this afternoon but the place was already wet and getting wetter will limit even more places to try...

"man up" all you want, I see it different. I think game is gonna smell human oder if the wind is wrong. So they smell a little deet with the sweat, I don't think they will run any faster. If the wind is good, you are good. So why suffer, keep the skeeters away and do your best to hunt the wind in your favor. Seems to work for me. Hell yeah I get busted sometimes, the predominate wind in NC is light and variable. But the skeeters have to "eat deet" if they want plazma from me. And about them pigs noses, ain't a deer alive that can out sniff them oinkers. Same goes for them though. Do your best to hunt the wind.

If I learned one thing when I was up in Canada for a spring bear hunt, it was the head nets are priceless! Get yourself a boonie hat and a good size head net. Put the net over the boonie hat so that it holds it off your head and away from your face. Tuck the bottom in under the collar of your shirt. I always put a little bit of Ben's 100 around the collar also.

Round two wasn't much better... We had four inches of rain to add to the wet. No fresh track in my place so I went walk about. Think I got Deet Poisoning... My lips all puffed up and my eyes burnt as it was carried off my forehead with the sweat...
I decided todo about a two mile walk out... Made for an interesting walk to places I had not been before. A few tracks here and there but no aminals...

Get a THERMACEL!!! Works miracles!!! I have shot 2 pigs with it burning in South Carolina. I hunted in a t-shirt the one time and didn't have one bite. You know they work because when the pad gets worn out the mosquitos come back until you put a new pad in it.

Other than that, Thanks for the report, You will get um next time!!!
