First Time Hunting Archery in a long time.

    So,
As long as the weather holds out which it looks like it might. I will be heading to Maryland as Dave Sikorski being the awesome guy he is, has invited me to come down amd try to stick something with an arrow...errh I meant a Bolt next weekend.

I started early on in my hunting career when my dad handed me my first bow 8 or 9 I believe. It was a long bow and I wore out some bails in the back yard. Than graduated to a recurve than on to the Compound. My first compound which is a far cry to what is on the market today got a lot of use. Unfortunately, 15 years ago I had an injury that would make it extremely difficult to hunt with a bow as I would have to switch arms to make it happen, My surgeon also wasn't thrilled on the idea as I have the nerve root damage in both arms just not as severe in my left.

So I was always faced with the choice to go get a medical clearance to use a crossbow but never took the step. Now they are legal in just about every state, So its time to get down and dirty and tear some things up.

I am shooting a Horton Vision and its pretty bad a$$ on loan from a buddy. Since I've never used one in a hunting situation what should I expect?. She shoots very nice but targets are a little predictable. They seem loud when fired, Has anyone experienced deer jumping the string?

Well wish me luck I hope to have some venison for the freezer and of course some recipe threads
I hope the bugs don't carry my fat rump away.

GOOD TO SEE YOUR ARCHERY HUNTING ONCE AGAIN...

THE CROSS-BOW, DON'T PUSH IT PAST 35 YDS...

PRACTICE, PRACTICE AND SHOOT SOME MORE, AND YES THEY DO MAKE SOME NOISE WHEN FIRED FOR SURE.

YES, DEER DO JUMP THE STRING, HAD IT HAPPEN MANY TIMES, JUST STAY WITH YOUR SHOT PLACEMENT AND YOU WILL BE FINE...

GOOD LUCK AND HAVE SOME FUN...

use a range finder, shoot for the heart and that will give you the best chance if the deer drops. As you prolly already know, a deers first reaction move is straight down as much as 16". I would not expect to make a killing shot on one past 30 yds with the noise. I have only shot 1 with a crossbow and it did a fine job. Good luck in your pursuit.

Thanks Guys, I'm getting really excited to be back at it with a pointy projectile.

Dave says the deer still seem to be nocturnal but we have been getting some cooler nights, so with any luck there will be a few moving about the farm.

    Thanks Tim

I'm setting up a blind for you mid day tomorrow in a spot that I've seen a small herd pass by every time I've hunted one particular stand.

If all goes as planned they'll be walking by you nice and close.

I'm looking forward to having you down, and I hope it's not the only time this year!

    So Far, So Good,

I have one of those, not so fancy, crossbow's. Even it will shoot 315 FPS, mighty fast deer to jump the string. I'm not saying it can't happen, just haven't seen it myself. You can dampen the string noise by selection of string. I bought a "flemish" string last year and it was quieter. You will only get one shot (unless it's a really stupid animal you're shooting at). With the time and motion it takes to re-load the bow, second shot's are over rated. The 35 yard rule is one I use myself. Take that "one shot you're looking for and it'll be fresh backstrap's and egg's for ya! Good luck with the hunt. Frank

    Hey Sikorski, I hunt too!!!!!

Well I rolled in a few hours ago, already drew blood. Negotiating the trophy fee over shipwreck rum and ginger ale. Sikorskis a tough negotiater I think he's steep for his fees on field mice. Stomped one as I came in the door. Realty nice here I can't wait to get in the field Dave saw a nice 8 point on his way out in the dark tonight. I will get photos and much video as I can. Stay tuned
