I've been setting up on some birds down here four times trying to kill one with a bow and they have been very difficult. The birds roost along a canal bordering an orange grove across roughly a half mile stretch and they are very unpredictable, never roosting in the same place twice in a row. Once they get into the grove they are next to impossible to deal with.
Today I took a different approach and waited about 200 yards back from the canal on an open road through the grove. At daylight I started clucking on a custom made box call that I made and they lit up instantly clucking on the roost (hens) and flew out very quickly. As soon as I heard them tree calling I hauled ass through the grove to get even with them and within five minutes I had three gobblers strutting down the road to me and leaving the hens.
They strutted to about 30 yards before I broke down and rolled one with my trusty Browning pump. The remaining two gobblers flogged the down bird for five minutes and finally wandered off. I could have easily killed them both with one shot but there's no point in being greedy right?
I love going in ninja style and rolling out on the birds much better than sitting in a blind anyway.
